Britney Spears pens personal Web message

Britney Spears says she "hit rock bottom," in a message posted on her Web site about the end of her marriage and her time in rehab.

"Recently, I was sent to a very humbling place called rehab. I truly hit rock bottom. Till this day I don't think that it was alcohol or depression," the 25-year-old pop star writes. "I was like a bad kid running around with ADD (attention deficit disorder)."

Spears completed a monthlong stay at a luxury Malibu rehabilitation treatment facility in March after a series of run-ins with the paparazzi that included a stop at a San Fernando Valley hair salon, where she was caught on video shearing her own locks. Other photos splashed across the Internet appeared to reveal Spears out partying wearing nothing underneath her short skirts.

She was seen going out with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan after filing for divorce from aspiring rapper Kevin Federline last November, just two months after giving birth to their second child, Jayden James. The pair also have an older son, Sean Preston, now 20 months.

The couple reached a divorce settlement in March.

"I had a manager from a long time ago come in and try to direct me and my life after I got my divorce," writes Spears. "I was so overwhelmed I think that I was in a little shock too. I didn't know who to go to."

"I realized how much energy and love I had put into my past relationship when it was gone because I genuinely did not know what to do with myself, and it made me so sad. I confess, I was so lost," she writes.

"I think the whole problem was letting too many people into my life," she continues. "You never know another person's intentions or what another person wants. ... I have had to cut so many people out of my life."

Spears also says she is "having to face a lot of things" as she raises her two young sons. "A lot of insecurities from when I was little are coming up again," she writes. "It is like we are never good enough."

Explaining her recent behavior, she says: "I think it is actually normal for a young girl to go out after a huge divorce."

"I am going to make mistakes everyday, and I am sure every mistake I make will probably be on CNN or `Good Morning America,'" she says. "I am only human people and I love you for still loving me."

She closes by saying: "We will never really understand or figure out life completely. That's God's job. I can't wait to meet him ... or her. Love, Britney."

On This Run, Way More Bandits Than Smokeys (but No Beer)

TODAY is the 30th anniversary of the release of the movie “Smokey and the Bandit,” a Burt Reynolds romp that the actor once described as “a little like eating Chinese food — about an hour after you see the movie, you may want to go see another one.”

But for many people, the real star of the movie was the car he drove: a 1977 black Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with gold striping and a “thunder chicken” graphic on the hood. With plenty of Hollywood stunts and trick driving, the Trans Am left an impression.

To commemorate the anniversary of the movie, a driving event called the Bandit Run 2007 was held from May 15 to May 17, with about 200 participants in 85 cars traveling the 660 miles from Texarkana, Tex., to Atlanta, the route traveled in the movie. The event was open to anyone; owning a Trans Am was not required.

The movie is about a trucker, nicknamed Snowman and played by Jerry Reed, and his decoy and lookout man, Bandit, played by Mr. Reynolds, who agree to transport 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana to Atlanta. It is Bandit’s job to occupy the police — nicknamed Smokey — so the tractor-trailer of beer can make it to Atlanta without being discovered.

Thirty years ago, Coors beer was not sold in states east of the Mississippi River. In the south, Texas was the cut-off line.

The idea for the Bandit Run was a collaboration of David Hershey of Keller, Tex., and Dave Hall, the owner of Restore a Muscle Car, a restoration shop in Lincoln, Neb., who said they thought it would be fun to recreate the road trip from the movie on its 30th anniversary. Mr. Hall’s shop had restored Mr. Hershey’s 1977 black Pontiac Trans Am SE, or special edition, which replicated the paint scheme of the Trans Am used in the movie. Mr. Hall and Mr. Hershey promoted the event on Motortopia, a motor enthusiast’s Web site. More than 300 joined the Bandit Run group, many posting photos and videos of their cars. Bandit Run participants came to Texarkana from all over the United States.

I wanted to attend, but I also wanted to arrive in the right car, so on April 20 I bought a black 1979 Trans Am with almost 100,000 miles for about $10,000 at a collector-car auction in Branson, Mo. I had always wanted a black Trans Am and this was my excuse to finally fulfill my dream. I bought one like the car in the movie.

Jim Cox, who, along with his wife, Kathy, owns the collector-car auction, found a mechanic to prepare the car for the trip. The air-conditioning was repaired, new front springs were installed, and the tires, brakes and shocks were inspected, adjusted and, in some cases, replaced. The foam was also replaced on the two front seats.

The Bandit Run group gathered with their cars May 15 at the Tex-Ark Antique Auto Museum. The mayors of Texarkana, Tex., and Texarkana, Ark., welcomed us. Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams from most model years were among the 25 or so cars there for the start. More cars, including many Trans Ams, dropped in and out of the run along the route.

Talking with the participants, one theme appeared continually: most were fascinated by the car in the movie and most first saw “Smokey and the Bandit” when they were much younger. Jed Morgan of Call, Tex., said he was “born in 1977, the same year as the movie.”

“I watched the movie likely since I was 3,” he said.

Mr. Morgan, 29, a nursing student, was traveling with his brother, R.J., 18, in a black 1977 Trans Am. Jed Morgan bought his car last year on eBay and is already devoted to it.

“I’ve already made arrangements that my brother will drive it in my funeral procession, if he survives me,” Jed Morgan said. “It will be in front of the hearse.”

We left Texarkana on that Tuesday morning with a police escort. In many of the small towns we drove through, police cars had pulled over with officers standing beside their cars like an informal honor guard. Most officers waved as we passed.

The first leg of our journey, and the longest drive, was on the first day. The 382 miles from Texarkana to Tupelo, Miss., was mostly on rural two-lane roads. We had good weather for most of the trip, with the exception of a cloudburst that happily coincided with a lunch stop.

If the first day had included a hard-luck trophy, our car would have won. About two hours into the trip, we noticed a strong smell of burning rubber. We looked under the hood and discovered that our air-conditioner compressor had seized. The compressor belt was destroying itself trying to turn on an unmovable bracket.

With a cut from a razor blade, we solved one problem only to have another appear. I thought that by removing the tension from one belt, I had changed the dynamic of the others, so I assumed the alternator belt was slipping. Tightening the other belts at our lunch stop did not help.

The problem was diagnosed as a broken fan clutch, a serious problem, but not one that had to be fixed immediately.

We soon stopped at an auto parts store in Greenville, Miss. Five minutes and $30 later, we were on our way with a new fan clutch ready to be installed.

Just outside of Itta Bena, Miss., our car had what could have been a trip-ending breakdown. The driver’s side rear wheel worked its way loose, and by the time we pulled over, three lug studs had sheared off and a third was bent, leaving the wheel attached with just one lug nut.

Had we traveled an additional few feet, the wheel would probably have come off. Our situation seemed pretty hopeless until Mr. Hall, the event organizer, appeared with some spare lug nuts. After scavenging one lug stud and lug nut from the opposite side of our car, we had enough parts to continue to Tupelo, our first overnight stop.

A morning car show in the parking lot of the Tupelo Automobile Museum gave us time to find some parts and fix the car. We were soon on the road, but about two and a half hours later we stopped just outside of Birmingham, Ala., so we could enter the city in a group. While we were waiting for the stragglers, many of the truckers who had been running with us for the last hour gave us a blast of their horns while some passing motorists flashed thumbs up. By now, our group included about 50 cars, the overwhelming majority of them Trans Ams.

Steve Clark, a club D.J., had traveled to the event from Sheffield, England. Mr. Clark, who said he was on his fourth car-related trip to the United States, owns a 1978 Trans Am, but he did not bring it along; he was a passenger in a friend’s 1969 Dodge Charger. Mr. Clark is planning to rent a car and end up in Nashville for the Dukesfest, an event related to “The Dukes of Hazzard” television show.

A lunch stop on the third day at the Talladega Superspeedway, the Nascar track, brought the group together for one last time before reaching Atlanta, about a two-hour drive east. Most of the participants were staying in Atlanta to participate in the Year One Experience, an open house run by Year One, one of the largest suppliers of restoration parts for muscle cars like Trans Ams.

Year One is offering a series of cars that are built using original Trans Ams as their starting point. A fully updated version with supercar performance, the Burt Reynolds Edition BAN II and BAN III, which was shown to the Bandit Run group, still retains much of the exterior look of the original cars. Engines are available up to a 650-horsepower 8.8-liter aluminum block. Fully restored and heavily modified, prices for the BAN II start at $129,900.

On the trip home, I wondered if the owner of a BAN II would have 12 times the fun that I had in my admittedly slower $10,000 original that was so prone to breakdowns.

Somehow, I don’t think that is possible.

104 Years of Ford Going to Drain

After years of being one of the largest and most renowned automaker, it seems like Ford the major stockholder of Mazda the manufacturer of Mazda cornering light is finally at its brink. It is no secret that Ford has been facing financial problems for years now brought about by products that failed to sell well in the market not to mention the frequent changes in the management stature.

Things have been going from bad to worst for the automaker that finally shareholders of Ford together with the heirs of Henry Ford are confronted with the prospect of finally relinquishing the control of the company whether they like it or not than to lose everything at the end.

The company has been lending just to meet the company's financing needs and right now it has exhausted all its resources and will need again fresh investment to pay for its factories, to launch new models, and to push through with its expansion plan for worldwide markets. The question is: Are there still investors and lenders that would risk additional billions knowing the family's dismal history as controlling shareholder? Frankly with the present condition that the automaker is in, it is hard to imagine that there would investors that are willing to take the risks.

The present wave of private-equity interest in Detroit automakers and suppliers would have been at Ford's advantage to find a financial partner but unfortunately most investors are not that willing to risk on the whims of family controlled management unless of course the family happens to have an outstanding record when it comes to handling a business.

Last May 10, the shareholders of Ford have rejected a proposal to end the family's control. The proposal would definitely face long odds especially since the family holds 40 percent of the votes. However, the margin of defeat was narrower this year compared to earlier years. The results show that 45 percent of the non-family voters would like to see the family out of power.

For the 104 years of Ford it has always been controlled by the Ford family with the addition of some hired hands. And it is not only once that the family has summarily fired or forced out non-family chief executive officers.

In the most recent happening at Ford the family has ease out one of it own. After disappointing financial results, Bill Ford Jr. last September have gave up his position as CEO in favor of Allan Mulally who is a senior Boeing Co. executive recruited to try and help the automaker regain financial health. On the other hand Bill Ford Jr. has remained chairman.

CEO Mullally optimistic in spite of crisis After his appointment as new CEO, Mulally has swung into action pledging most of Ford's assets to borrow $23.5 billion in cash. And because auto making is a lead-time business, it would take at least two to three years before Mulally could see the results of all his efforts. Hopefully Ford's cash hoard will last during that period and of course it is also expected that the automaker should gain profit before it run out completely of cash.

The current price of Ford's stock is $8.78 giving it a market value of $16.5 billion, which is a little more than that of Harley-Davidson Inc. The price of the automaker is down by 75 percent from its peak in 1999, this can be seen as little more than a call option on the part of the company avoiding bankruptcy until 2010. Despite the crisis that the company is in right now CEO Mulallly is optimistic that the automaker will be profitable again. Ford has obtained a net loss of $12.6 billion last year and $282 million in the first quarter of this year which makes me wonder for how long CEO Mulally can keep up its positive facade.

The Circle of Trust Bill Ford aged 50 with his cousin Edsel 58, his father Bill Sr., 82, plus a handful of Fords---all have held senior positions at Ford or on its board. They together with dozens of other family members also owned super-voting Class B shares in a family trust. For those who are not aware of what Class B stock is it represents 40 percent of the shareholders vote with less than 4 percent of the equity.

Class B shares are owned by family members only. In case no family member wants to buy B shares these shares they are put up for sale where they are converted to Class A shares and ultimately sold for cash. When enough B shares are converted, the family loses a proportion of control.

Last April 21, Ford met with investment bankers Joseph Perella and Peter Weinberg in Dearborn, Michigan. Mulally spoke at the meeting which was held to brief family members of whom mostly aren't close to the company's operations. The meeting was private although Steve Hamp, Bill Ford Jr.'s brother-in-law, later told Detroit News that the concept of bringing in an outsider as an adviser was not agreed on by everybody saying that it was not yet time.

According to David Cole, Chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, "As most companies go down the road in generations, they have difficulties and that's why they sell out. Don't think the Fords are different. Do you ride out the troubles or get out? What do you do?"

Not all Fords are worried about the imminent bankruptcy of Ford Motors like for instance Bill Ford Dr., owner of the Detroit Lions, and Elena Ford, 40 daughter of the Greek shipping tycoon---these are Fords that are rich even without owning a piece of the automaker. However the other Fords those that are not really rich and are just depending on the stock dividend from the Ford Motors are really feeling the pinch especially after the company has suspended the release of common stock dividend last summer.

If the suspension of common stock dividend had already a great impact on some of the members of the Ford family just imagine their worries if Ford Motors finally ends in bankruptcy which would definitely render their shares worthless unless of course they start selling their shares today which by the way only cost a meager $8 or $9 a share.

New Accord To Hit Market Soon

Since 1976, Honda has been a strong contender in the midsize car segment when they introduced the Honda Accord. Through the years, the sedan and coupe versions of the Accord have claimed awards and rave reviews from car experts.

The popularity of the Accord is not only limited to those within the automotive circle. Its popularity among consumers is well documented as can be seen in the high sales figures for this particular car model. For the 2008 model year, the Accord will be in its eighth generation and, as can be expected, Honda has made the Accord look even better as can be seen in the 2008 Accord Concept that the Japanese car manufacturer unveiled at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) earlier this year.

The concept Accord is expected to get most of its styling cues from the new Honda Civic - another popular Honda car model. Recently, spy shots of the production version of the 2008 Accord has surfaced and car design experts have claimed that the production version looks exactly like the concept Accord which was unveiled earlier this year except for some modifications. Some of the styling cues used on the concept Accord which has made it to the production Accord are the aggressive-looking headlight configuration, the side character lines, and the green house or the glassed-in upper section of the Accord's body. The most notable difference between the concept and the production version is the design of the lower front grille. In the concept Accord, the lower front grille is designed with horizontal slats whereas in the production Accord, these are eliminated.

It can be remembered that during the unveiling of the concept Accord, John Mendel, the senior vice president of American Honda, claimed that the 2008 Accord will be a trendsetter in its class. "The Accord Coupe Concept demonstrates the styling direction for the upcoming, eighth-generation Accord," says Mendel. "As the industry's target for midsize segment excellence, the all-new Accord will set a new benchmark for safety, efficiency, performance, refinement and style," he added.

As far as the power of the Accord is concerned, Honda is yet to make public the specs for the 2008 Accord. If the production Accord would come with the powerplant used by the concept Accord, it will be stowing under its hood a "more powerful and lower-emissions V6 engine". Aside from that the new Accord is expected to be equipped with standard features and can be easily installed with aftermarket parts such as the Honda Accord wheel dust shield.

Touring Car Race Report on Lime Rock

Chip Herr of Lititz, Pa., has recently obtained his first win of the 2007 SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship season in Round of Three at Lime Rock Park, part of the SPEED Touring Car Classics. James Sofronas of Newport Beach California together with Jeff Altenburg of Ellicott City, Md., has completed the podium.

Everything was going right for Herr from the very start that the lights went out; he has gotten a great launch in his No. 17 STaSIS/Clear Capital Audi A4 and beat polesitter Pierre Kleinubing into Turn One to take the lead. Kleinubing slotted his No.1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura TSX behind Herr for four laps but was able to pass Herr on the fifth lap due to some mistakes made by Herr.

Herr said, "I came into Turn Six and there was a car in the wall. I saw the marks and thought the accident happened at the turn-in. I turned in a little bit early and hit grass and dirt and got into a four-wheel slide and had to jump on the brakes. He just went right inside of me on the downhill. I almost put it in the wall. I had to back out of it and he didn't. He knows what to do, that's why he's good."

Shortly after Kleinubing took the lead, a full course yellow came out when the No. 11 3R-Racing Dodge SRT-4 of Robb Holland and the No. 96 Tindol Motorsports/Pesco Inc. Mazda 6 of Charlie Putman came together in West Bend. Miraculously both drivers walked away uninjured.

On the lap 10 restart, it was Kleinubing with the great launch going unchallenged in Turn One and slowly pulling out a lead over Herr which reached 2.514 seconds by lap 16. But Herr would not just let Kleinubing get ahead farther and trumped Kleinubing's fast race lap with one of his on. Then on lap 26 it happen, Herr shot by a slowing Kleinubing on the front stretch. As Herr led by 1 3.207 second over Sofronas, Kleinubing headed to the pits.

Herr said, "I said 'thank you' on the front straight."

Kleinubing after checking under the hood rejoined the field and finished 19th. The crew was able to repair the defending SCCA SPEED Touring Ca Champion's running problem. From there it was all smooth sailing for Herr. He took his fourth career-win by 3.211 seconds over Sofronas in the 44-lap, 67.32-mile race. Herr was also been able to set the fastest lap of the race at 58.646 (93.919 mph) on the 1.53 mile road course.

Herr explained, "It feels great. I love Lime Rock. Every time I've come here, I've done well. This is a momentum course that takes a lot of guts and you have to know your car. STaSIS has really worked with me to get the car right and with a new teammate, we've been able to share data between the three of us. Pierre had a strong car and he actually started pulling away from me. I didn't know if I should try to burn the car up and track him down or risk having [Sofronas] catch me. I was going to be happy with a podium, but then Pierre had his problem and came back to me."

And after passing off current point leader Altenburg immediately on the start, Sofronas played a more relaxed and consistent race in his No. 29 Global Motorsports Group BMW 325Ci which has equaled his career-best finish second which last happened at Road America in 2005. The finish has also earned Sofronas his second straight Toyo Cup award.

Sofronas said, "I really wanted to try to get a win for [Tecmark team owner] Walter [Swick], but second is obviously the next best thing. On the start, I got a heck of a launch and Chip closed the door and I had to lift or else I would have plowed him. He made a nice move. My car was loose in the beginning and it was a little hairy the first five laps, but Walter set the car up to be good over a long run. I was able to cut a couple of quick laps to try to chase Chip down, but it wasn't enough to get up to him. All the while, I had Jeff behind me, so I tried to click off my laps, hoping Chip would make a mistake, but he didn't."

On the other for Altenburg the race was an even finish. He started third and finishes third. However the current point leader has a close call with Seth Thomas of the No. 38 BimmerWord BMW 325i on the restart. Thomas had the jump on Altenburg going into Turn One and tried the outside line on the No. 72 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6. The pair made a slight contact before Thomas finally went off course in the Esses with a flat tire.

Altenburg said, "On the restart, Seth Thomas got a great run on me and we went side-by-side through Turn One. The second part of Big Bend tightens up. He was on the outside, maybe half a car back and we made a little contact. I was worried my day was over, but it turned out it might have been the end of his. When Pierre fell back, that took a little bit of my aggression away. I don't know that I had anything for James--probably not."

The remainder of the race for Altenburg was much relaxed and the podium finish help extend his lead in the Championship to 26 over teammate Randy Pobst who finished 11th place. With the win Herr lies in third, specifically 14 points behind Pobst.

Adam Pecorari of Aspon, Pa., has place two Audis in top five by wheeling his No. 19 STaSIS/Centre Parts Audi A4 to a fourth place finish. This is a career best for the SCCA SPEED Touring Car newcomer who also collected the Piloti Rookie of the Race Award.

And after a long battle with the No. 97 Mazdaspeed/Tindol/Oakley/Sparco Mazda 6 of Charles Espenlaub, peter Cunningham of Grafton, Wis., has obtained fifth position in his No. 42 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura TSX on the final lap when the Espenlaub ran wide passing the Esses.

Espenlaub then returned to the track in time finish sixth ahead of Kuno Wittmer of Acura RSX, Ian Baas of Audi A4 , Michael Galati of Mazda 6 , and Jason Martinelli of BMW 325Ci---they completed thetop ten.

More results: Stan Wilson of Mount Joliet, Tenn., finished 13th in the No. 92 sorted Performance Dodge SRT-4, collecting both the Sunoco Hard Charger and the B&M Shifters Holeshot Award given for advancing 10 positions in the race of which five were derived from the start of the race.

And lastly, Mazda the maker of high-quality Mazda distributor rotor continues to lead the Manufacturer's Championship by 23 points over Acura and Audi who are now both at second place. BMW on the other hand is currently on fourth with nine points.

Mazda UK Announced Record Sales

Mazda UK has recently reached its target sales of 50,500 vehicles in the financial year ending last March. Mazda's UK subsidiary has played a key role in Mazda Europe's 301,200 sales which were the highest figures recorded for the 15 years of Mazda UK. Mazda UK Managing Director Rob Lindley said, "But the next few months, as dealers wait for all-new Mazda2 and CX-7 to arrive will be quite an intense time for the industry as a whole." As a prize for a job well done, Mazda the producer of unparalleled Mazda clutch slave cylinder has given its 100 dealers, which is about two-thirds of the total network, a long weekend vacation with their partners in Morocco. This is Mazda's way of thanking them for the efforts that they have given which enable the company to reach its 50,000 sales.

Lindley said, "We hit the numbers we needed to in a tough retail market and in March, the MX-5 had its best ever month." Mazda UK has sold 1,973 units of MX-5 that includes the soft top and roadster coupe; and 2,944 units of Mazda6. The Mazda 6 has achieved a 1 percent increase over its March 2006 record and this is despite of the fact that its one of the older models in the current range. The UK dealers have already a preview of Mazda2 and Mazda CX-7 crossover Sports Utility vehicle in Germany earlier this month at a European Mazda dealer event. And Lindley is looking forward for these two new models to further boost sales by 3,500 for this financial year to March 2008. Lindley said, "Our forecast is that we will hit 53,700 in the 2007 fiscal year. We have a lot of new product arriving but it will be in the second half of the year." Despite the tough conditions in UK, Mazda was still able to make last March its second best ever month with a total of 9,877 sales. Lindley also added, "Overall I am satisfied in what was clearly a pretty tough challenge for the team. Personally I think it will continue to be tough for all retailers in the year ahead as consumer confidence generally is down in the UK at the moment. Having said that our strong dealer network combined with the latest sports models - the Mazda3 MPS hot hatch along with the more powerful 2.0-litre 143ps Mazda3 diesel and a new special edition for MX-5 in May - will mean sales momentum continues from spring into summer." For its Europe market, Mazda was able to record 301,200 sales with four other countries namely Russia with 35,500, Spain with 18,700, France with 15,000, and Portugal with 4,350.

DuPont Extends Partnership with BMW Sauber

At the ongoing 2007 Formula One season, the BMW Sauber Formula One Team is currently third on the Constructor's Championship and so far has been showing a more or less good performance. The team has recorded four fourth place finishes after four races in the season. And with the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix posing a big challenge for them, a big boost in the team's morale came in the announcement by DuPont that they will be extending their sponsorship of the Formula One team.

The world's second largest chemical company will now be an official sponsor of the Formula One team. The relationship between the team and the chemical company started a year ago on May 2006 when DuPont became a promotional partner of the Formula One team.

Following the announcement, Mario Theissen, the BMW Motorsports Director is visibly pleased with the development. "We are delighted with this extended involvement and with the research exchange we have enjoyed so far with DuPont," said Theissen. "We will continue to steadily develop our strategic partnership," he added in conclusion.

Meanwhile, Ian Hudson, the president of DuPont Europe, Middle East and Africa, has this to say: "Through innovation and science, DuPont helps the BMW Sauber Team keep their drivers and team safer, as well as increase the cars' looks and performance. Many DuPont materials and applications used throughout the car demonstrate our position as a strong partner to the automotive industry. We are looking forward to extending our cooperation with the BMW Sauber F1 team on many fronts in the future."

Currently, BMW Sauber is getting ready for the fifth race of the season which will be held at the city streets of Monte Carlo. Considered the most prestigious race of the Formula One season, the Monaco Grand Prix will see the two drivers for BMW Sauber - Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica - looking for a better performance and even possibly a podium finish. It can be remembered that in the last race, the Spanish Grand Prix, Heidfeld was forced to retire due to a gearbox problem although other components are working well from the engine to the BMW's exhaust tip. This problem has already been fixed and Heidfeld looks as if he is ready to finish the Monaco race, possibly within the top three. With the sponsorship already in the bag and their cars already prepped for the race, BMW Sauber is expected to give a good performance at the Monaco race after Renault, Toyota and Williams are all gunning for the third spot that they currently hold.

Harley Davidson F-150 packs with more muscle

Ford major stockholder of Mazda the maker of top-of-the-line Mazda control arm together with Harley Davidson the renowned motorcycle maker will indulge in a joint venture again to create what they do best---trucks. This may come as a surprise but Ford and Harley has been producing some of the truly impressive trucks for nine years now. Overall the tandem has produced over 60,000 Ford and Harley pickups.

In the span of nine years Ford and Harley has been able to do some remarkable improvements on the appearance of the trucks like for instance they were responsible for the SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles, regular box, and flared fenders. And for the past two years, they have been consistently making improvements on the Harley truck which by the way now rides on a SuperCrew body style with a regular bed.

Powertrain wise, the standard F-150 fared well with its 5.4 liter Triton 24-valve V8 that can be driven through either the rear, or on all four wheels. Ford will also produce a very rare diesel-powered, F-250 Super Duty Harley Davidson truck.

But for this year, 2007, the F-150 Harley Davidson will be pretty much the same as last year. It comes in two exterior colors from which buyers may choose from namely Ebony or Amethyst. Its exterior features include chrome-plated 22-inch wheels, special Harley Davidson badge, blacked out headlamp bezels, and seven-bar chrome-plated grille. Although, there won't be much changes on the appearance of the F-150 Harley Davidson but try to peep under its bonnet and you will see its new powerplant.

It can be remembered that buyers of the previously presented Harley Davidson F-150 were complaining about the lack of power of the truck. They said that the truck just didn't meet up to its modified appearance.

The previously produced Harley Davidson F-150 trucks particularly those of 2002 model year were packed with the powerplant derived from the Ford-F-150 Lightning. It produces 340 horsepower compared to the present Harley F-150 that produces only 300 horsepower in short instead of improving its somewhat deteriorated in terms of power.

And that's not all, the Harley F-150 is also short in power as compared to its competitors in the full-size pickup truck segment like for instance the Dodge's HEMI-powered Ram that revs up a mighty 345 horsepower and of course let us not forget Toyota's 5.7 liter iForce powered Tundra that produces 380 horsepower.

Fortunately, Ford is not the type to just sit around and do nothing. It started calling some friends at Saleen to help it develop a solution. And they did come up with a solution alright! The new F-150 Harley Davidson will develop an impressive 450 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque courtesy of the twin-screw supercharger and a dual stage water-to-air intercooler combo. This setup is similar with the one employed on the Mustang, the Shelby GT 500, that helps it produce 500 horsepower output.

Aside from the mechanical bits, the new F-150 Harley is also given a louder exhaust note, coupled with a pair of dash-top instruments that keep track of the supercharger's boost and air charge temperature. This new improve Harley Davidson F-150 is going to be available in a four-door, short box configuration that includes a four-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. And this time Ford has made sure that nobody will complain that the Harley F-150 lacks power.

NASCAR to Implement Use of CoT Next Season

In a tragic accident at the 2001 Daytona 500 cost Dale Earnhardt Sr. his life and the sport of stock car racing has lost one of its best drivers. After that disastrous incident, the governing body of the Nextel Cup Series, NASCAR, has worked on making the sport safer for drivers. They have implemented the use of head-and-neck restraints to protect drivers in the unfortunate case of crashes.

NASCAR also went to great lengths and is supervising the installation of soft walls around tracks. Most of all, the sanctioning body has worked on the development of a universal body template for all cars competing in the NASCAR races. The template is used to ensure equality among cars and to promote safety. The race car is called the Car of Tomorrow or CoT and it is designed primarily for the safety of drivers.

The original plan for the CoT is for it to be slowly introduced to NASCAR races and will be the sole car that will be used come the 2009 season. Recently though, NASCAR announced that the CoT will be used exclusively starting with the 2008 season. This announcement came after teams have expressed their concern about the impracticality of maintaining two different cars for the current season and for the next year.

Robin Pemberton, the NASCAR's vice president of competition, has this to say about the full implementation of the CoT next season: "We are proud of how the new car has performed at multiple tracks. NASCAR, with the support of team owners, agreed that the new car is ready to compete at all NASCAR Nextel Cup Series events in 2008. Beginning next year the Car of Tomorrow is officially 'the car,' a Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota." Originally, NASCAR planned to race the CoT for only 26 races next season. But due to the cost of maintaining two cars, the current car and the CoT, team owners and drivers alike are keen to the idea of using the Car of Tomorrow full time for the 2008 season. These cars are deemed safer than passenger cars, even those equipped with Powerstop brake parts.

As for the driver-friendliness of the Car of Tomorrow, drivers have been expressing their willingness to race the CoT full time next season. Jeff Green, one of the drivers who seem to be at ease with the CoT, has this to say: "As far as the racing, to me the COT puts things back into the driver's hands more. With the cars we're using now, either you hit the setup or you miss it. If you miss it, there's not a lot a driver can do to make up for that. With the COT, even if the setup's not perfect, a driver can still make things happen and have a good run. It reminds me of the way the cars drove six or seven years ago. I like that, and I'm excited to get back to that."

Ford Touts Ten Ways To Save Fuel

The travel authority also forecasts that more will travel by car over the holiday than a year ago: 32.1 million motorists will drive, up 1.8 percent from last year. With gas prices getting higher, traveling any distance by car can be expensive. However, there are steps motorists can take to get the most from a tank a gas.

Fuel efficiency experts agree that making simple changes to driving habits can increase fuel economy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving such as rapid acceleration, speeding and braking can lower gas mileage significantly.

Below are a few tips to help drivers conserve fuel and save money at the pump, while at the same time helping the environment and improving traffic safety.

  1. Slow down and watch speed -- Drive 55 miles per hour instead of 65 to save fuel. EPA estimates a 10-15 percent improvement in fuel economy by following this tip. Also, aim for a constant speed. Pumping the accelerator sends more fuel into the engine. Using cruise control whenever possible on the highway helps maintain speeds and conserve fuel.
  2. Accelerate and brake smoothly -- Accelerating smoothly from a stop and braking softly conserves fuel. Fast starts, weaving in and out of traffic and hard braking wastes fuel and wears out some of the car components, such as brakes and tires, more quickly. Maintain a safe distance between vehicles and anticipate traffic conditions to allow for more time to brake and accelerate gradually.
  3. No idling -- Today's engines don't need a warm up. Start the car immediately and gently drive away. Don't leave your car idling. Prolonged idling increases emissions and wastes fuel. Turn the engine off in non-traffic situations, such as at bank and fast food drive-up windows, when idling more than 30 seconds.
  4. Check your tires -- Keeptires properly inflated to the recommended tire pressure. This alone can reduce the average amount of fuel use by 3-4 percent. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and reduce fuel economy. They also wear more rapidly. Check the vehicle's door-post sticker for minimum cold tire inflation pressure.
  5. Be kind to your vehicle -- Maintain proper engine tune-up to keep vehicles running efficiently. Keep the wheels aligned. Wheels that are fighting each other waste fuel. Replace air filters as recommended. Use a fuel with good detergent additives to keep the vehicle engine clean and performing efficiently. Always consult the Owner's Manual for proper maintenance.
  6. Travel light -- Avoid piling a lot of luggage on the roof rack. The added frontal area reduces aerodynamics and will hurt fuel economy, reducing it by as much as 5 percent. Remove excess weight from the vehicle. Unnecessary weight, such as unneeded items in the trunk, makes the engine work harder and consumes more fuel.
  7. Minimize use of heater and air conditioning -- Use heating and air conditioning selectively to reduce the load on the engine. Decreasing your usage of the air conditioner when temperatures are above 80 degrees can help you save 10-15 percent of fuel. Use the vent setting as much as possible. Park in the shade to keep car cool and reduce the need for air conditioning.
  8. Close windows at high speeds -- Don't drive with the windows open unless your keep your speed under 50 mph . Driving with the windows open at highways speeds increases aerodynamic drag on the vehicle and lowers fuel economy.
  9. Choose the right oil -- Use good quality, energy-conserving EC oils with the viscosity grade recommended in the Owner's Manual. Look for cans marked with the symbol ECII, which is the American Society of Testing Materials logo for fuel-efficient oils.
  10. Consolidate trips -- Plan ahead to consolidate your trips. This will enable you to bypass congested routes, lead to less idling, fewer start-ups and less stop-and-go traffic. Whenever feasible, share a ride and/or carpool.

A bold and bright future for car colors

The color of your next car may come from the makeup counter. Bolder colors and glitzy paint finishes are on the rise in the auto market and promise to offset staid shades of black, gray, silver and white that persistently dominate the roads.

Color trends that affect every conceivable consumable — cars, purses, shoes, cell phones, lamps, linens, wallpaper — can often be traced back to only a handful of hue gurus. Li Edelkoort is one of them. Her ability to accurately predict color trends has given her cult status in the fashion and design industries. She runs the Trend Union, which provides color forecasting guides two years in advance of the seasons that cosmetic, fashion, interior and product designers work toward.

Edelkoort’s reports are bold juxtapositions, and the connection between her inspiration and a future trend often seem esoteric. In one of her current publications, for instance, a close-cropped photo of an eye with mascara-loaded lashes points to the auto world: an idea of outlined features and more outspoken trims, shown as an off-white car interior with heavily contrasting stitching.

One Trend Union report, the new twice-yearly Colour Tool, includes a section specific to the automotive world. “The idea is to show designers in all fields how different industries use color in inspiring ways,” says Edelkoort, who has worked with Citroen, Jaguar, Nissan, Renault and Volkswagen, although not only on color.

Another of the elite few color experts is Chris Webb, who heads color development at General Motors’ 11 design studios globally. “In selling cars, color has never been more important,” he says. In fact, 39 percent of consumers will go to another brand if the color they want isn’t available. A decade ago, that figure stood at 27 percent.

The life of a hot new fashion color may be a matter of months in some cases, but car colors can last for years. High development costs, which Webb puts at roughly $250,000 per color, and rigorous testing, often lasting more than two years, create immense pressure for color studios to get the right colors on the right products.

The auto world’s color experts formulate new hues and hunt for trends years in advance; they draw inspiration from streetwear fashion to cell phones. GM’s studios have already formulated exterior colors for the 2009 model year and are currently putting the finishing touches on 2010. DuPont, one of the leading providers of automotive finishes, is currently hashing out its 2011 colors.

The most popular color currently on the market is silver, which appears in some variation on at least one-fifth of all cars worldwide, according to DuPont. Silver’s popularity is stabilizing and more subtle grays are emerging in its place, says Karen Surcina, a DuPont color marketing and technology manager. “We see a lot of differentiation in silver at this point,” she says. Showier silver variants are also starting to appear, such as Alubeam, a high-tech, lustrous finish which recently made its debut on the 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG 40th Anniversary edition. The metallic finish has a higher luster than a traditional silver finish because the paint pigment particles are much smaller. Though Alubeam is currently only available on this top-tier Mercedes, a similar finish may appear on the mass market in several years. “We’re looking into liquid-metal-like chromes as an alternative to silver,” Surcina says.

Greens are beginning to reappear after a downturn early in the decade, says GM’s Webb. “I believe this is partly due to the dominance of the leafy, midtone greens in the late '80s and early '90s, which left our customers with a dated image of that color family.” Webb says green will be widely available again on 2009 and 2010 models, and the hunter and forest greens popular in the '90s will be replaced with showier variants. GM has already unveiled a Savannah Green Metallic for its Saturn Vue and Ion, as well as Emerald Jewel Metallic, a modern-day version of classic British racing green, which will be seen on the Pontiac G6 and Solstice and Saturn Sky.

Blue has been a dominant color family in the 2000s, Webb says, and will continue to infiltrate other families — adding tints to silvers and grays, and enriching reds. While glitzy show cars may arrive in shimmering purple, they are not generally what the public wants, Webb says. “Trend colors will never penetrate the market, but they get you press coverage and magazine covers,” he says.

A blazing orange Chevrolet Camaro convertible concept was arguably the star of the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 22-inch wheels and drop-top profile aside, much of this car’s mass appeal was due to its eyeball-grabbing orange color.

“I can’t claim the attention was all about the color. But the ‘Hugger Orange Tricoat’ played a big role in the Camaro convertible’s success,” says GM’s Webb, who helped develop the hue. “It’s a high-impact trend color based on a historical Camaro paint job [which first appeared in 1969]. Both the general consumer and the Camaro enthusiast totally ‘got it,’” he says.

Occasionally, what designers see as a “trend” color breaks into the mass market, as in the case of orange. Originally seen as a niche color, GM now offers it on three-quarters of its models. “Orange will be moving much more into a copper space in the future,” says DuPont's Surcina. “It’s a niche, and has been a “notice me” color.”

Technical developments and new techniques can also lead to new colors, as in the case of Xirallic, a man-made crystal that adds the appearance of movement and dimension, and can be especially useful in breathing new life into a classic or basic color, such as white or gray. Webb says that Xirallic will be used in nearly 50 percent of GM’s North American colors in coming years.

The Trend Union’s Edelkoort predicts the emergence of gold in the automotive universe. “A few years ago, we started to see gold as more of a color and less as a metal. We saw it taking over many domains — most notably, of course, the cosmetic industry,” she says. It made its way into everything from chocolate to running shoes. “It’s like gold came down from its pedestal.” But that doesn’t make it timid, she says. “It’s a little more exclusive, and you need to have more guts to have a gold car. But it’s becoming a very important second color after silver,” Edelkoort says.

Besides gold, she sees more metallic colors on the rise, including brass, bronze and tin. “I’m predicting a wave of patinated bronze colors will emerge — the greens, the darker tones.”

She also looks for brown to get big. Deep browns are already appearing in car interiors, such as on various BMW models and the Saturn Aura’s Morocco Brown offering. But metallic brown exterior finishes will emerge as well. “Brown is still a suspect color in the luxury market. But it’s very chic to have a dark brown car,” says Edelkoort. She points to a rich brown that Nissan is currently offering on its Japan-only Cube subcompact. “It’s small, square and brown — like a piece of chocolate,” she says.

Edelkoort agrees that there will be a return to the gray car. “We are tired of black and white, in symbolic terms especially. Gray represents a need for osmosis and dialogue, a middle of the road mentality, which we haven’t addressed for the last 15 years. I think it’s very interesting and avant-garde to be like a mouse,” she says.

Fuel bill unlikely to make much mileage

With American motorists paying $3 a gallon or more to fill up their cars, it might be comforting to know that new laws are brewing to improve fuel efficiency. But a loophole in the legislation could mean greater fuel efficiency is still a long way off.

A bill approved by a Senate committee this month would require automakers to ensure their passenger vehicle fleets — cars, minivans, pickups and sport utility vehicles — achieve an average fuel consumption rating of 35 miles per gallon by 2020, up from 27.5 mpg currently. The measure also would require carmakers to boost fuel efficiency by 4 percent each year after 2020.

The bill sounds like a step forward, but it was amended shortly before the panel’s vote to allow a reduced standard if the Secretary of Transportation finds "clear and convincing evidence" that achieving Congress' target would not be "cost effective" for the affected automakers.

That could render the final law meaningless, observers argue, as it gives the White House wide latitude to set lower fuel-economy targets.

The shift could still leave “drivers paying too much at the pump,” said Kevin Curtis, senior vice president of the National Environmental Trust, an environmental group. In a statement issued after the vote, the group called on the Senate to improve the bill and deliver improvements "that are long overdue.”

In his State of the Union address this year, President Bush called for an annual, 4 percent improvement in fuel economy, while the National Academy of Sciences has found a mandatory, 35 mpg standard in fuel efficiency to be achievable, safe and cost-effective, Curtis noted.

“The Senate shouldn’t settle for anything less,” he said.

Karen Steuer, vice president for government affairs at the group, noted that the bill has a long way to go before it becomes law. “So we are concerned, not panicked,” she said.

She said she was optimistic that a bill could be passed by the Senate and sent on to the House by June.

President Bush, who has not weighed in on the debate over fuel efficiency standards, ordered federal agencies last week to find a way to begin regulating vehicle emissions by the time he leaves office. He was responding to a Supreme Court ruling last month that declared carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are air pollutants and thus can be regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Bush also has set a goal of reducing gas consumption by 20 percent over 10 years, partly by increasing the use of alternative fuels.

Corporate average fuel economy (or “CAFE”) standards have remained virtually unchanged for more than 30 years, in part because of opposition to any change by the Big Three U.S. automakers.

Despite rising concern about global warming, the high cost of gas and dependence on imported oil, the industry remains opposed to the increase sought by the Senate bill.

“[We] support increasing fuel economy standards to the maximum feasible level, but we don’t believe that the standards, as proposed in this legislation, are attainable, nor are they technologically feasible,” said Charles Territo, spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which represents the Big Three as well as Japanese heavyweight Toyota.

Territo argues that not only will the proposed rise in fuel economy standards increase the cost of vehicles, but it potentially will have a "devastating" economic impact on carmakers. There are already more than 200 vehicle models available that offer fuel economy ratings of 30 mpg or more, he argued.

The Bush administration has calculated that increases in fuel economy requirements will cost the industry $114 billion by 2017.

“Manufacturers have to weigh a number of different factors when they make cars, because consumers want cars that are safe, affordable, reliable, fuel efficient and have new technologies, like navigation systems,” Territo said. “They have to create a vehicle that offers all that to a consumer and at an affordable price.”

The National Environmental Trust’s Steuer said she sees some validity in the industry’s economic arguments but notes that the cost of developing more efficient cars could be subsidized through tax breaks or help with high health care costs.

“The U.S. auto industry said that mandating seat belts would break them, and they also said that airbags would break them financially, but what’s breaking them is they have made dreadful management decisions over the last 10 to 15 years,” she said.

“Americans are buying large, inefficient pickup trucks and SUVs because the automotive industry has convinced them that if mileage requirements go up, they’ll be sacrificing power and their safety,” she said. “But safety in smaller cars has improved, so if we can get the auto industry to stop spinning things based on their profitability we could perhaps get consumers to change their minds.”

Territo sees an environmental movement trying to dictate what vehicles Americans drive.

“Some of the proponents of this legislation are not happy with the types of vehicles American consumers favor,” Territo said. He noted that even with record gas prices, more than half of new passenger vehicles sold are minivans, SUVs or pickup trucks.

For years, Americans have favored larger vehicles including SUVs and trucks that tend to be less fuel efficient than sedans. Mandating stricter fuel economy standards will effectively force manufacturers to make less-profitable smaller cars, taking many of the more popular larger vehicles off the road, says Aaron Bragman, a research analyst at consulting firm Global Insight.

“Consumer preference and demand cannot be legislated through mandates,” he wrote in a research note. Despite rising gas prices, "the demand for large vehicles in the U.S. market does not look to significantly abate, regardless of congressional mandate,” he said.

The top 10 worst cities for speeding

Detroit is the worst place to speed in the country, according to the Speed Trap Exchange, a web site where users can post the whereabouts of speed traps all over the country.

In anticipation of holiday travel, the site put out a list of the top ten places in the U.S. with the most speed traps, based on user postings. “There are more than 10,000 postings total on the site, 2,000 of which are from Texas,” said Aaron Quinn, the site’s communication director. “Detroit’s suburbs have more than 100 postings.”

Quinn said that the purpose of the Speed Trap Exchange is to draw attention to areas where speed limits are arbitrarily low and to let people know about variations in enforcement of speed limits between different regions. “In some areas, everyone drives 10 mph over the speed limit and it is accepted by the law enforcement agencies,” he said. “And in some areas they pull you over if you go over the limit by 1 mph.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding is the second highest cause of fatal car accidents in the U.S. and accounted for 13,189, or 30.4 percent, of the 43,443 traffic-related deaths in 2005. Only drunk driving kills more people on the road, taking 16,885 lives in 2005, according to the most recent NHTSA data. Together drunk driving and speeding account for nearly 70 percent of the total number of fatal crashes in 2005.

Chrysler AG's Twenty Years of "Concept to Reality"

For years the "concept to reality" has been the theme that embodies the Chrysler Group design philosophy and many are hoping that the company will apply this theme on their concept vehicles for this year, 2007.

The ability of Chrysler to create a design that is not only compelling but at the same time relevant and innovative has helped it to come up with concept vehicles that are truly worth waiting for. The latest concept vehicles from Chrysler the producer of high quality Dodge seat clearly show a design tradition that has become the strength of the company.

Chrysler has started creating remarkable concept vehicles at the Frankfurt Motor Show where it revealed a Lamborghini engined, cab-forward style, four door Chrysler Portifino concept sedan in the year 1987. And after almost 20 years of more than 100 concept vehicles produced by Chrysler has helped it to reinvent and maintain its image as a car company that is driven by design and engineering.

There are two major roles that concept vehicles play in the Chrysler Group. First they showcase future design direction for Chrysler's cars and trucks. Secondly, they help to attract the best young designers in the world to join the designing studios of the Chrysler Group.

Chrysler's concept vehicle program is an opportunity given to designers for them to experiment on new color combination, features, vehicle size and segments. Moreover these concept vehicles displayed new design cues that the automaker may used for its future vehicles even if the whole concept vehicle will not reach production.

Generally, most of the concept vehicles revealed at auto shows around the world each year are not just built to look good but used more as a specimen to see how potential buyers would react to the design cues presented. And usually only those features and design that get the highest approval or praise are considered for production.

One of the edges of Chrysler over other automaker is that it produces concept vehicles that can actually be driven and usually the automaker allows journalists to test drive their concept cars to obtain feedbacks and of course publicity. Most of the concept vehicles that Chrysler has presented at auto shows have made it to production. An example of which is its Dodge Challenger which was first unveiled as a concept vehicle at the 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. It was later on announced that the Challenger will go into production in 2008.

Trevor Creed, Senior Vice president of the Product Design Office, Chrysler Group said, "We've always said at Chrysler that we don't just produce concepts for fun. We have proved year after year that our concepts are innovative and relevant. Our track record shows that many Chrysler Group concepts, and several of the design features showcased on our concept vehicles, have gone into production. While we can't say yet if any of our 2007 concepts will eventually be seen in our showrooms, they clearly hint at exciting and innovative future design directions that could find their way into our company's products."

Concept vehicles for 2007 For this year Chrysler's group of concept vehicles will include one for each of the company's brands. The Chrysler Nassau Concept which combines refinement, style, and function showcases a new image of the Chrysler brand. The Nassau Concept was first unveiled at the 2007 NAIAS. It's a four-door, four passenger luxury coupe that is made more emotional and at the same artistically sends the message of what it means to be a Chrysler.

The Jeep Trailhawk which was also presented at the 2007 NAIAS combines all the spectrum of the Jeep brand. The Trailhawk possesses the core off-road features of the new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and combines it with refined sophistication of an all-new on-road, open air concept vehicle. The Trailhawk provides a unique and fresh image for the Jeep brand.

Another concept vehicle introduced this year is the Dodge Demon which is a compact, agile roadster with an "attitude". The Demon exudes a perfect balance of classic sports car proportion and simplicity mixed with modern design and performance. The vehicle is designed as an affordable Dodge sports car that combines brand cues of bold design and powerful performance made even more compelling with its open-air "fun to drive" attitude. The Dodge Demon has made its debut at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.

Chrysler 20 years of concept vehicles... The Chrysler Group from its first 1924 Chrysler sedan has been developing innovative designs and been improving the engineering of their vehicles. And even today in the modern era, starting 1998, the company has already produced more that 100 concept vehicles in various shapes, configurations, sizes, and materials.

Chrysler's Top Three Mileage Misers

Cars.com has recently released their rankings of the vehicles that deliver the "Best Bang for Your Buck" and surprisingly three of the cars included are assembled at Chrysler's assembly plan in Belvidere. This is good news for Chrysler the producer of top-of-the-line Dodge Stealth partsespecially since there are doubts if it can really survive on its own. Being included in the list of cars.com which is a trusted site of customers who are searching for suggestions on vehicles to buy simply shows that Chrysler has some really great products to offer.

Anyway, in coming up with its "Best bang for Your Buck" list, cars.com make use of a formula that combined a vehicle's base sticker price with a calculation of its lifetime fuel costs. Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass were the top two great buys for SUVs in the cars.com rankings while the Dodge Caliber was ranked second in the midsize listings.

Last 2006 the year when gas prices start increasing above $3 gallon, Japan's Toyota was able to take a big bite off the market share from Detroit's Big Three carmakers. And during that time the Big Three were so engrossed in trucks, SUVs, and minivans. Toyota has taken advantage of this and before the Big Three can act, the Japanese automaker was already taking over of the market.

Chrysler at that time was already offering the Dodge Caliber in the market. Unfortunately the Compass was just hitting dealerships while the Patriot didn't go into production until December---in short, Chrysler has very little products available in the market that can compete with Toyota's hybrid vehicles.

And for this year, it looks like gas prices will soar even higher than last year fortunately Chrysler is in a much better position right now especially with its Belvidere-built products.

It was last year that Toyota passed Chrysler as the No.3 carmaker in the US. The Japanese automaker has also taken the No. 2 spot from Ford and basing on the first Q1 result for this year Toyota has already surpassed GM as world's number one automaker. The huge bulk of Toyota's sales came from its highly fuel-efficient lineup of vehicles.

But basing on the cars.com rankings, when factoring in base sticker price, all automakers have their own models to brag about.

Going back to Chrysler, aside from its Patriot, Compass, and Caliber, its Dodge Charger is ranked at No. 2 in full-size cars while the Dodge Caravan is second in the minivan segment. On the other hand it was General Motors that has gain the top rank in terms of full-size car with its Chevrolet Impala. Ford has also led the list in the ultra competitive pickup truck category wit its Ford Ranger.

As expected Toyota headed the compact car lust with its Yaris and was ranked second in pickups for its Tacoma. Surprisingly, the Prius which is a hybrid that usually has a high waiting list for customers was just ranked No. 6 in midsize cars because of its base sticker price of $22,175 which is $4,225 more than the next highest priced among the top 10 in that category.

Chrysler's Top Brass Assured Employees that Cerberus is 100% Committed

Chrysler's CEO LaSorda in a forum has assured 400 employees that Cerberus is 100 percent committed. Similarly, top executives of Chrysler has also launched major internal communications to help in informing the still jittery employees of what the sale of the company to Cerberus Capital have in store for them.

The stressful months of uncertainty about the future of Chrysler manufacturer of high quality Dodge step bar has ended last week when Daimler/Chrysler has finally announced that it has chosen Cerberus as the new owner of its money losing arm. But despite the proclamation there are still lots of questions an unanswered and most of them are from the employees.

Last Monday, Chrysler CEO LaSorda hosted a town hall-style meeting with some 400 employees, updating them on the plan of the company in the coming weeks. His message was--- "Cerberus is 100 percent committed to Chrysler and employees need to buckle down on the turnaround plan."

To illustrate just how information hungry were the employees, it took 14 minutes for the 400 employees to sign up online for CEO LaSorda's meeting. Some of the toughest questions thrown at Chrysler's CEO dwell on the issue why executives were recently awarded bonuses.

The management of Chrysler will schedule more forums for the next three weeks to answer all the questions of the employees and at the same time to inform them on the various changes that will take happen in the company.

There was one salaried employee that described the atmosphere this week as "pretty much business as usual here but everybody wants to know what is going to happen."

Both CEO LaSorda and Chief Operating Officer Ridenour are stressing in their messages the point that Chrysler employees can determine their future by executing the so-called Recovery and Transformation Plan that was started last February 14.

In a note written by Ridenour last Tuesday, employees were given a comprehensive update on the "Plan" that includes job cuts, factory closures, and a push into global markets. He also stated in the note that the strategy will require a "built-in discipline that has been lacking before."

The plan will be comprised of 29 sub-teams working in seven key areas that will cover product strategy to capital management to quality and material cost management. There will be deadlines and targets that are to be set while team projections are tracked.

Quality Car Seats - Choose a New Car Seat for the Safety of Your Child

I can tell you from experience, there's a lot of shopping to do when a new baby is on the way! For a while I thought the list was endless: a crib, bassinet, changing table, swing, walker, clothes, high chair, toys, stroller, car seat, on and on. And that's not to mention maternity clothes for Mom-to-be!

There might be a lot of items on the list, but one of the most important things you're going to buy for your baby is a car seat. In fact, a lot of hospitals make sure you have proper car seat equipment before you even take the baby home for the first time.

Of course we all hope that the car seats for our children are never put to the test. In case the worst happens, though, buying a new car seat makes sure that your child will be as safe as possible. Car seat manufacturers are required to meet strict safety guidelines, and car seat makers like Britax are always refining their designs with new innovations to make your child as safe as possible.

An industry standard that has been introduced a few years ago is called LATCH. It stands for "Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren." It has not only increased the safety of child car seats, but made it easier to install and remove them also.

The system dictates that car makers provide standardized mounting points for car seats, and car seat manufacturers put accommodating mounting points on their car seats also. Everybody wins! Your child is safer and you are happy with the ease of use.

New car seat models from makers such as Britax not only comply with the LATCH requirements, but they often have additional safety features. For instance, a number of models from Britax offer a supplemental upper anchor called Versa Tether which provides more security and minimizes the possibility of head injury.

There is no one car seat that is the "safest" or "best." The best and safest car seat is the one that fits your child correctly and is installed and secured properly, every time you drive. And speaking of proper use, remember to never place a rear-facing car seat in the front seat of a car that has a passenger air bag. For that matter, all children under the age of thirteen are safer in the back seat.

The saying "they don't make 'em like they used to" could certainly apply to car seats! Technology and research have definitely played a central role in the evolution of child car seats, to the benefit of everyone. Give your child every advantage and make sure they are protected by a new car seat designed with their safety and comfort in mind.

Volvo Airbag Celebrates 20 Years

In 1987, the first Volvo car to be equipped with an airbag left the assembly line. But Volvo Cars continuously refined its airbag to deliver cutting-edge airbag technology that aficionados enjoy today. The airbag offers an enhanced protection in both frontal and side impacts.

Included in Volvo's world firsts are the seat-mounted side airbag and the Inflatable Curtain (IC). The airbag is a standard feature since several years, but in the early days both the technology and its reliability stirred argument. At present, many of these worries were justified.

"Getting an airbag to deploy is not a problem, but to make it deploy in exactly the right moment is," explained Lennart Johansson, the section head at the Volvo Cars Interior Product Development department.

It was in 1950 when the first airbag was used. But the technology was far-off from mature. One 1955 patent described a system similar to the modern technology but the most significant distinction is that the driver himself had to deploy the bag by pressing a button.

In 1984, a U.S. bill accelerated the airbag development process. The bill stressed the perils of not using safety belt. It also demanded automakers to equip their cars with protective safety devices that did not need to be activated by the occupants.

In time, the airbag was swiftly recognized as the best option. Back then, critics predicted that the airbag would even substitute the three-point safety belt that was introduced by Volvo in 1959. However, the Swedish automaker successfully refuted that the best safety result would be achieved by a co-operation between the safety belt system and the airbag technology.

"More airbags will not necessarily improve the overall safety level. It is important to regard the airbag as part of a systematic approach where the car's structure, the Seat belts and the airbags interact to ensure optimum absorption of the collision forces in an accident," intimated Johansson.

In 1991, the airbag became a standard feature of the 850. Four years after, the automaker took the technology to the next level by launching a side airbag that is integrated in the backrest of the seat which was made to be ready to help protect the chest in a side impact. "We took a huge step forward by making the side airbag a part of our patented Side Impact Protection System that is integrated in the body structure. It took other carmakers a couple of years to catch up," said Johansson.

At present, airbags play significant role in etching the name of the Swedish automaker to correspond to the word safety. The Volvo repair manual reflects their essence and significance to bring forth comfy and safe ride.

"Airbag performance has been improved significantly. Today's technology is much more adapted to the collision sequence and how occupants are moved by the crash forces. Twenty years down the road, airbag technology is a vital part of our aim to build the safest cars in the world," noted Johansson.

Chrysler Group To Open New Engine Plant

The past few years have seen Detroit's Big Three facing their toughest challenge yet. Due to the increasing demand for smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have been struggling against their Asian rivals. The reduced sales output of these three car manufacturers have resulted to restructuring plans which involves the shutting down of plants and cutting down the number of employees.

For Chrysler, the consequence of their poor performance in the market is the severance of their ties with parent DaimlerChrysler AG. Before that though, the company has already closed down plants, reduced the number of shifts, and implemented workforce reduction.

Those steps are part of the company's efforts to bring back the whole team to profitability. Earlier this year, Chrysler announced that they will put into effect their "Powertrain Offensive". The said initiative is a $3 billion investment which is aimed to produce engines which will be able to compete with Asian-made engines in terms of fuel efficiency. Recently, the company hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new engine plant which will be built in Trenton, Michigan. The said assembly plant will be producing fuel-efficient V6 engines. Inside the company, these engines are called the Phoenix engines hence the name given to the new plant which is the Trenton Phoenix Engine Plant. The facility is only planned to produce engines and other parts such as Chrysler struts, shock absorbers, control arms, and other suspension system parts will be manufactured elsewhere.

Present during the groundbreaking ceremony is Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Trenton Mayor Gerald Brown, and the UAW Vice President General Holiefield. Aside from these government officials, the ceremony was also attended by Chrysler executives. One of them is Chrysler's Executive Vice President for Manufacturing, Frank Ewasyshyn. Speaking during the ceremony, Ewasyshyn has this to say: "Today's groundbreaking ceremony commemorates an important growth milestone for Chrysler Group and for the City of Trenton. Constructing our new plant at this site also confirms the commitment of Chrysler Group to investing in the communities where we do business and supporting economic development throughout the State of Michigan. This new plant will enable us to develop products that are designed to meet changing consumer tastes for more fuel efficient vehicles."

Upon completion, the Phoenix engine facility is expected to produce 400,000 to 440,000 engines every year. These engines will be supplied to different Chrysler auto assembly facilities. The new engine plant is expected to provide at least 485 full-time employees when it becomes fully operational.

Mazda Makes Sporty SUV

Car buyers differ in the things they consider in looking for a car. Some look for luxury, others for economy. Some look for comfy ones, while others for sporty. Some look for one because they need it, while others look for one because they want it or they want something to flaunt.

Whatever their reason is, the car manufacturers cannot do anything to force them to buy their products. The manufacturers can only persuade. That is why they do intensive enhancements innovations, advertising and different marketing strategies.

And because of the very wide variety of human preferences, manufacturers of auto mobiles see to it that they could really give what their customer would prefer. From minivans to trucks up to super high technology cars; name it, they all have it!

Mazda is one of those manufacturers of vehicles that are well known for its excellent performing sedans and wagons that are fun to drive, really sporty sports car, and great performing models such as the SP and the MPS.

This is the reason why driving fans anticipated similar characteristics when Mazda unleashed its CX-7 'crossover' SUV.

With top of the line sporty and safety features, the CX-7 comes with excellent wheels, a really sporty physical appearance, and a well polished roof line that does not negatively affect the head room of the passengers as well as the area for the pieces of luggage.

As to its driving, the CX-7 SUV smoothly corners and turns even at a high speed. The steering is also excellent as the vehicle's speed on the road increases. In effect, these characteristics yield fun, great, and exciting handling and driving experience.

This vehicle does not anymore use the V6 power engine. Rather, it now uses an inter-cooled 2.3 liter four-cylinder engine that gives more power and torque as compared to the previous engine. It has a maximum torque of 350Nm at a low 2500rpm, and 174kW at 5000rpm. This powerful engine is available for the Mazda6 MPS.

This engine is differentiated from the MPS version because a new turbo is used. And as a result, this improves regulated response at low revolutions and reduces turbo lag.

In the one-specification CX-7, a six-speed 'Activematic' automatic transmission comes standard. For manual lovers, this transmission suits you because it has a manual mode.

The new Mazda vehicle has Active Torque-Split all-wheel drive. This sends driving to the front wheels and will stop when the computer detects a loss of traction. In this case, the available torque that is sent to the wheels in the rear is up to 50 percent.

Anyone riding in this vehicle will experience a firm, but not hard, ride. Yes, you may hear some noise on the road while driving this car but no need to worry because it is manageable.

Though the rear seat base is not quite spacious, the car has sufficient leg, head and knee room for three persons at the back.

This new Mazda SUV costs $48,995, but you can be assured of the things you want for sporty SUV. At this price, standard features include six air bags, ABS, dynamic stability control and traction control on the safety front for safety purposes, an excellent 222-watt nine-speaker Bose audio to further soothe the ambience, and leather upholstery for further convenient and comfort.

GE Introduces First Hybrid Road Locomotive

Multinational American technology and services conglomerate General Electric (GE) announced recently that they have developed the first ever hybrid road locomotive. The said engineering feat is part of the company's "Ecomagination" event held in Los Angeles, California. The said initiative is an attempt to give the company a reputation of being a "green" company". The hybrid road locomotive will be unveiled at the Union Station in the City of Angels.

The development of the road locomotive is aimed to show the potential of the company to produce technologies which will reduce the release of harmful substances into the environment. Some of these harmful substances that GE aims to eliminate or reduce from road locomotives are nitrous oxide and other particulate matters.

John M. Dineen, the President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Transportation, which is formerly known as GE Rail, has this to say after announcing the unveiling of the hybrid road locomotive: "This hybrid demonstration unit is another example of our commitment to invest in technology and bring new, innovative concepts to life. We will continue to support Ecomagination by engineering product offerings that help customers improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and sustain a long life of reliable service."

The said hybrid vehicle is equipped with a powertrain which can produce as much as 4,400 horsepower. Similar to a gas-electric hybrid vehicle, the road locomotive is also equipped with a set of battery pack. But unlike a small hybrid car, the locomotive cannot be covered with a LeBra car cover. The design of the hybrid road locomotive also allows the batteries to be charged during braking. Like the regenerative braking system used by hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius, the hybrid road locomotive uses the energy produced during braking to recharge its batteries. According to the calculation of GE Transportation, the power stored in the road locomotive's battery pack can reduce fuel consumption by as much as ten percent.

Steve Gray, the GE Transportation Engineering Leader, extolled the virtues of the Evolution® Hybrid saying: "This locomotive will reduce emissions while providing operating benefits to our customers that transport consumer goods and other raw materials by recapturing the energy wasted during train braking. As we work toward bringing the Evolution® Hybrid locomotive to commercial production, our engineers will use this locomotive as a living lab working with our customers to test, study, and refine our hybrid locomotive technology."

In developing the hybrid road locomotive, GE partnered with BNSF. The railway company has helped GE in developing the hybrid powertrain for the vehicle. Mathew K. Rose, the Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of BNSF Railway Company has this to say: "BNSF is committed to helping develop new technologies that benefit our operations as well as the environment. We are proud to be partners with GE on the development of the hybrid locomotive, alternative fuel research and the testing of other technologies that optimize the performance of our locomotive fleets."

XM Satellite Radio for General Motors Pre-Owned Vehicles

The biggest satellite radio service provider partnered with the world's larges car manufacturer to provide pre-owned vehicles with satellite radio. XM and General Motors recently announced that they will be working together to provide Cadillac and Hummer Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles with XM's services. This means that XM will not only be available to new car buyers but it will also be available for those who will purchase certified used vehicles from General Motors.

More than 115,000 General Motors used vehicles will be equipped with the satellite radio. This number is expected to balloon to 168,000 by next year. This is a move on the part of General Motors to attract the attention of car buyers as the company continues to struggle against Asian car manufacturers, most prominently Toyota.

The program states that the used vehicles will come with a three month subscription to the XM Satellite Radio. The brands that will be made available with the satellite radio service are Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, GMC Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Hummer. This shows that pre-owned vehicles not only come with aftermarket parts such as K&N filters but they also do come with added features. For those who are interested in buying a pre-owned vehicle, http://www.xmradio.com/whatisxm/inyourvehicle/used-vehicles.xmc has a complete list of pre-owned vehicles offered with the XM Satellite Radio service.

Marisa Uchin, Director of Remarketing and Automotive Strategy for XM has this to say about their working relationship with General Motors: "GM is XM's largest automotive partner and XM looks forward to providing premier entertainment to this important and growing segment of pre-owned vehicle customers. Now customers who purchase a certified GM used vehicle from Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Oldsmobile, Cadillac or HUMMER have the opportunity to conveniently experience XM's 170-plus channels of music, talk, sports and entertainment, adding to the exceptional driving experience customers come to expect when purchasing a certified used vehicle."

These pre-owned vehicles come with warranties to suit the number of miles that they have already traveled. For Cadillac Pre-Owned Vehicles, the warranty being offered by General Motors is a 6-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Meanwhile, for Hummer vehicles, the pre owned vehicles are only qualified for the pre-owned certificate if they are less than 4 years old and has not run for more than 50,000 miles.

Listen to Your Car

The human senses are of huge help in everyday living. Practically speaking, because of their huge importance in one's life, one cannot live without it.

One typical example of the essence of these senses in is when having a car trouble. Often times, drivers do not really know what the problem is until such time that the car breaks down. Because of man's sense of hearing, car troubles are detected.

Most of the noises heard on the car are squeaks, screech, squeals, rattles, rumbles, ping, heavy knock, clunch and the like. You should take note that once you hear either of these sounds or the like, your car is already giving you a clue as to it problem that you need to pay attention to.

A squeal is a shrill, sharp noise. Once this occurs, it means the engine speed is in trouble. Your vehicle may have loose or worn parts such as power steering, fan or air conditioning belt.

A click is a small sharp noise that usually point out either the engine speed or the vehicle speed. This means your vehicle may either have loose wheel cover, loose or bent fan blade, stuck valve lifter or low engine oil.

A screech is a high-pitched noise. It is usually heard while the vehicle is in motion or running. It sounds like piercing a metal. This sound is a hint to tell the driver that brake maintenance is needed because it is brought about by the wearing of the brake.

A rumble, as compared to a screech, is a low pitched rhythmic sound. This is caused by defective car parts such as exhaust pipe, converter or muffler. Sometimes, it is also caused by universal joint or other drive-line component that is already worn.

A ping is also a pitched sound but it sounds like tapping a metal. Like a squeal and a click, it may also imply an engine speed problem. Often times, this noise is caused by fuel with a lower octane rating than the manufacturers' recommended one. In this case, your owner's manual is a huge MUST. Read it and check the appropriate octane rating for your car. If you want, you may switch to a different gas octane or gas station. But if trouble still occurs, the problem could be the engine ignition timing. If you are in doubt of this problem, go see a mechanic.

A heavy knock is a rhythmic pounding sound. This could mean crankshaft or connecting rod bearings that are worn out or not properly tighten transmission torque converter.

A clunk is a random thumping sound. This noise could imply loose shock absorber or other suspension component and exhaust pipe or muffler.

If noise problems still persist, another culprit could be the axle assembly. It could be malfunctioning or damaged. Because SUVs, pick up trucks usually go off-road or pass through harsh and uneven terrains they are the vehicles that mostly encounter this problem.

A vehicle axle is an important auto part that also needs to be taken cared of. It is a load- bearing assembly that joins two wheels on opposite sides together. This may be a combination of an axle shaft, one or two constant velocity joints or a U-joint maybe. It is built in order to pass on rotational force that is coming from the transmission to the wheels of your vehicle. It is usually present on front and four-wheel drive auto mobiles as well as on many high-end, rear-wheel drive European import cars.

Transaxle is the most well known type of axle. It usually comes with a differential and a manual or automatic transmission.

Drive axle is another common type. It is also known as live axle and has the differential.

The not so well known type is the non-driving straight axle. This axle connects the wheels together though it does not have the differential.

Car axles do the job of keeping up the position of the wheels relative to the body of the vehicle and to each other. It is a fact that the wheels are the only car parts that touch the ground. And because of this, the axles bear the weight of the vehicle that includes the weight of the passengers and the cargo, if there is any. They also carry the forces of acceleration between the vehicle and the ground.

Vehicle axles have different purposes depending on their complexity. A simple straight axle's job is to attach point of the wheels and at the same time bear the weight of the vehicle. The drive axle does the same task, but they also give the abilities of differential torque transfer. A transaxle does all the mentioned jobs of the drive axle plus the capabilities of transmission gear-changing.

So if hear some grinding noises, your car problem could be the axle assembly. This means it is not functioning properly. In this case, it is better to replace it. Or if you do not want to alter your Mazda axle assembly earlier than you want or need to, better maintain it properly.

Noises are undesirable whatever their forms are. So in case you hear noise coming from your car, do something about it.

Right Collision Repairs Severely Needed

Say your Mazda car experienced a collision and your Mazda body kits were damaged, what is the remedy that comes to your mind? To look for a collision repair shop, right? But the question is: How do you choose the right collision repair center?

With over 35,000 auto body repair shops all over the United States, choosing the repair shop can make a car owner dizzy.

The Vice President of the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB), Steve Cox, agreed that an insurance company may make some recommendations on the right repair shop but he asserted that the ultimate responsibility in selecting a trustworthy and quality-oriented repair shop is in the hands of the drivers themselves. According to him, choosing the right one is a must in order to achieve the desired results.

With the aim of helping the consumers to better manage the collision repair experience, the CBBB and the National Auto Body Council (NABC) have teamed up. Together, they give tips on how to save money on a replacement rental car and on how to arrange any arguments between the shop and the car owner.

The CBBB and the NABC recommend opting for a trustworthy collision repair shop. According to them, a car owner must check out the shop's qualifications. This can be done through asking about advanced technician training from a national organization. It is also a must to look for a shop committed to customer satisfaction.

According to them, everything must be in a black and white form. This means the transaction must be in written form. The car owner must get a written repair and price estimate of the work to be performed. Before the job begins, explanation of why specific recommendations are necessary to fix the collision damage is also important. They further said warranty is another must.

Meanwhile, when buying a brand new car, it will come with an auto insurance policy. Those small prints in that written policy can make a big difference if you need to have collision repairs made to your car. This is especially important if parts need to be substituted.

Most written insurance policies use very specific words as to the replacement parts. Your car's insurance policy may state that the insurance company will use similar kind and quality parts that were originally provided by the manufacturer of your car. Some drivers take this as a minor concern. But your car manufacturer takes this as a major one because most repair shops use salvaged parts or not really quality parts.

Here are some 2 tips to avoid scams in collision repairs:

The first one is that before selecting an insurance company or when renewing your car's insurance policy; know first the limitations of the policy as to the replacement parts. An insurance representative can help in discussing these limitations.

The second tip is that if the company's replacement part policy limitations are issues to you, try other insurers. Because consumers nowadays are very meticulous on replacement part restrictions, there are some insurance companies which offer more choices to policyholders.

The general rule is actually you must get the highest level of satisfaction once your vehicle is replaced. After all, you are the owner of your car so it must yield you the best satisfaction it can ever give.

12 Usual Car Problems

Problems are inevitable especially to cars. Here are 12 car problems that are usually experienced by most car owners:

Worn brake parts - Brakes are very important. Yes they are. A brake is a device that is responsible for slowing or stopping the motion of your vehicle, and keeping it from starting to move again. The speed of your car largely depends on the brakes. And taking them for granted might lead to a danger. Never postpone the needed brake system service. In the case of your Mazda car, have it a regular maintenance to inspect the Mazda brake caliper which plays a very vital role in the brake system.

Worn windshield wiper blades - If you see worn windshield wiper blades on your vehicle, immediately replace them. Do not anymore wait for a rainy day to replace worn blades because this weather can further damage the blades that can eventually lead to an accident.

Defective lights - Car lights are very important especially when having a night driving. For the people on the road to know your car's direction, front, rear, and back lights should be well functioning. The fog lights are very necessary in foggy areas to clearly see the road despite the presence of the fogs. Check all lights before going elsewhere with your car.

Blocked filters - Air, oil, gas, fuel, transmission and other filters must all be unclogged. They all contribute to the performance of the vehicle. Scheduled replacements of these parts extend car life and improve performance.

Worn spark plugs - This instance reduces fuels efficiency and increases emissions in the exhaust. They also contribute to a poor performance of the engine. Regularly check these plugs to have a maintained excellent engine performance.

Worn battery cables - Worn cables and a weak battery inflame a trouble that is just staring. If the engine turns over slowly, have the battery and charging system inspected.

Rusted belts and rotten hoses - The engine cooling, alternator, power steering, and air conditioner are affected by a slipping belt. If belts are glazed and hoses are rotten, immediately replace them. It is important to note that vacuum and power steering hoses are obstacles to better performance and assured safety.

Delinquent cooling system - To avoid deterioration of radiator or heater core see to it to regularly service the cooling system. This is most important during summer season.

Leaking shock absorbers - Worn shocks or struts negatively affect the ride control and easily deteriorate tires. Avoid these leaks by regularly checking them.

Damaged CV joint boots - These are boots which are made up of rubber. These are built to protect the crucial CV joints that transcend power to your wheels. They need regular inspection and replacement if needed.

Leaking muffler - Lift your car occasionally. This is to check the muffler and other parts of the exhaust system. The exhaust system is the one responsible for releasing used gases in the air. It is important to maintain this system to make sure that every gas will be excreted safely.

Tired Tires - Tires are the only car parts that touch the ground. Worn tires are dangerous. Proper inflation, alignment and balance are needed to extend the life of your tires.

Car problems are really inevitable. But proper car caring and maintenance will greatly help in the prevention of these problems.

Honda To Roll Out Hydrogen Hybrid In 2008

The Honda Motor Co. Ltd. continues to develop fuel efficient product lines to bolster its lead as the 'greenest' automaker. Earlier, the Japanese automaker announced its plan to roll out a new hydrogen hybrid that will be released next year.

The upcoming fuel cell vehicle gets an equivalent of nearly 70 mpg. Japan's second largest automaker has been developing the FCX for nearly two decades and finally believes the car is ready for the tough streets and demands of the real world. Honda expects the 2008 FCX will get a fuel mileage of about 68 mpg in combined highway and city driving, with a range of 270 miles. The only emission that the FCX's electric engine produces is water vapor that is created when hydrogen and oxygen combine to produce electricity.

Contrary to the Honda Civic Nitrous Systems, the FCX "is not just some far out, pie-in-the-sky exercise in what may or may not come to fruition some day in the distant future," said Steve Ellis, the manager of fuel cell vehicle marketing for American Honda Motor Co. Inc. "We feel fuel cell electric vehicles are the best and ultimate solution to the twin environmental and societal challenges of global climate change and energy sustainability."

The car is the first hydrogen fuel cell car that has been certified for daily use by both the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board. "Along with that, we've already done our own internal crash testing to ensure that it meets federal crash standards as well. So we consider this to be a production car," Honda spokesman Chris Naughton said.

Do not expect much change when the production model hits the road either, Naughton said. "We very much expect to carry over not only the sleek styling and very spacious interior, but also the performance characteristics. Any changes will mainly slight tweaks, like headlights, bumper height and a few other things to make it a true production car," Naughton added.

"It's important to get fuel cells on the road," said Paul Taylor, the chief economist of the Washington, D.C.-based National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). "We've had fuel-cell buses running in Chicago for a while, but I don't know whether they can get through to Denver or not."

Local dealer Mile High Honda does not have any official confirmation from the Japanese automaker about the delivery of fuel-cell cars, said Tom Easaw, the dealership's Internet sales manager. "Honda has been developing FCX," Easaw said. "Filling up fuel-cell cars could be an issue unless you have hydrogen fueling stations. To my knowledge, there aren't any hydrogen fueling stations in Denver."

Approximately twelve states have hydrogen-fueling stations, and California accounts for most of them. Additionally, even at the higher mpg, getting hydrogen from fossil fuels is not worth the cost of the vehicles and energy loss of the conversion. This is why some critics are discouraging production of said vehicles at the present time.

Formula BMW: Hylkema's Next Career Step

A month from now, a young racer named Thomas Hylkema will make his official debut in the German Formula BMW championship at the street circuit of the Norisring. Hylkema will be part of the Eifelland Racing squad this season. The team has already completed its driver lineup after signing up the young racer.

Next to the Dutchman, BMW Sauber will field cars for Daniel Campos, Jens Klingmann and Tiago Geronimi. As part of his preparations, the protégé of racing driver Phil Bastiaans completed a lot tests in the Formula BMW and he is eager to make the next step in his early racing career. Monday, Hylkema got through a successful test day at the Belgian Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

In 2003, Hylkema started his racing career in a kart. A year after, he competed in the Vortex Rok. In 2005, he raced for Martijn Koene. Hylkema twice finished on the fifth place in the final championship standings. Last year, he moved to the Benelux Racing League Light and drove for the Collé Rental & Sales Racing Team.

Hylkema wanted to make the next step in his career and Formula BMW seemed to be the best choice. This is because most of the races are held as support races at the DTM, WTCC and Formula 1 weekends. Hylkema, at the Delft University of Technology, won the race at the Nürburgring and started from pole position once at Zolder. In this series he met the experienced Phil Bastiaans. The two established good friendship and camaraderie that bonded them to their passion - racing.

Bastiaans and Hylkema went to the DELL Formula BMW World Final at Valencia in Spain where the best 36 drivers of four different Formula BMW championships rivaled to bag the 'World Champion Formula BMW" title. After several talks with Eifelland Racing, Hylkema was invited for a test with the team.

"Formula BMW is a world wide renowned feeder series for young talented racing drivers. Drivers like Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien, Nico Rosberg and more recently Sebastian Vettel found their way into F1 via the Formula BMW. Because all the races are driven during the Formula 1, WTCC and DTM weekends, the series is also sure of broad media attention," said Hylkema.

He added, "The use of identical cars, engines, tyres and fuel for all competitors makes sure that the driver is the most important factor in this championship. It is an ideal opportunity for me to start in this series. I am now with an excellent team and have a highly experienced team owner that wants to teach me everything I need to know. After a decent preparation in which I got to know several different sorts of tracks, I am now really looking forward to finally make my debut in a Formula BMW at the Norisring!"

The Formula BMW car is powered by a powerful four cylinder/16 valve engine and is equipped with a Formula 3 sequential gearbox mated to the BMW CV boot.

Selecting the Best Pressure Washing and Power Washing Equipment for Car Washing and Auto Detailing

Car washing and auto detailing professionals seeking commercial grade pressure washing and power washing equipment must evaluate the various technologies on the market while critically examining features and components. Only then can they begin to select the best pressure washing machines for their particular applications. Many in the car washing and auto detailing industry often make a mistake by selecting low-priced, under-featured power washing equipment that will absolutely not last. Pressure washing equipment pricing is a consideration, but not at the risk of negatively impacting quality and performance.

Unfortunately, many feel pressure washing and power washing machines are similar, but that could not be further from the truth. Retail stores like Lowes and Home Depot offer a variety of pressure washing equipment, but the reality is the system components, motors, pumps and other parts are just not designed to for heavy-duty usage over time, especially when one considers car washing and auto detailing. Logic rules when the one compares the pricing of one of these light-duty power washing machines to commercial and industrial pressure washing systems selling for hundreds and even thousands of dollars more.

Commercial pressure washing machines are excellent for the car washing and auto detailing industry and sold in a variety of configurations and technologies. A car washing or auto detailing business can purchase a cold, hot, or even steam power washing machine powered by electric, propane, gasoline, and even diesel technology. The pressure washing machines' psi and flow rate will also impact car washing and overall auto detailing performance and cleaning results. The best pressure washing and power washing equipment can last for more than twenty years.

Professional car washing and auto detailing work should involve hot water power washing equipment as the goal is to wash cars and vehicles more quickly and effectively. Cold pressure washing systems simply lack the higher temperatures that are so necessary to help clean the car surfaces more deeply and dissolve substances more quickly. Only higher temperature power washing machines are capably of delivering that kind of performance.

Certainly, auto detailing and car washing success is dependent upon the customer's satisfaction with the cleaning job. Pressure washing and power washing cleaning chemicals are a critical aspect of any car washing and auto detailing business, but the type and safety of the chemicals is important as well. The EPA closely monitors the car washing and auto detailing industry to help ensure runoff is captured without pouring down storm drains. Car washing and auto detailing professionals must employ whatever systems are necessary to ensure regulations are met, or else the EPA will impose stiff fines.

Green cleaning chemicals and solutions have become the buzzwords in the car washing and auto detailing industry. Be very careful to carefully review and evaluate the green cleaning chemicals presented to you to help ensure they perform as well as the vendors claim for your car washing and auto detailing business. The car washing and auto detailing industry is laden with traditional cleaning chemicals as well as the more popular green cleaning chemicals, but many do not work well. Your task is to weed out the good from the bad before making a decision. Nano technology is the latest offering in green cleaning chemicals and will make a dramatic impact in the car washing and auto detailing industry.

Your car washing and auto detailing business may require the use of electricity rather than fossil fuels to power as well as heat a power washing machine. Many in the car washing business wish to use pressure washing equipment with a lower flow rate, especially if drainage is a consideration within their facility. Fortunately, all electric, hot, low flow, high pressure washing equipment is available on the market to meet your needs. Often these high-performance power washing machines require a minimum of 220 volts of power, so you may need an electrician to make the necessary changes within your facility.

Make an informed decision before purchasing pressure washing and power washing machines for your car washing and auto detailing business. Your customers' satisfaction and the success of your operation depend upon it.

Additional Ford Hybrid Taxis at the street of New York City

The announcement recently made by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg with regards to the changing of taxi policy and increasing fuel economy standards have been at the advantage of Ford--major stockholder of Mazda maker of Mazda AC compressor --- since the said policy would further highlights the automaker's leadership in the field of hybrid taxis.

The Ford Escape Hybrid together with the Mercury Mariner Hybrid are the only hybrid vehicles that have been able to meet the current New York City taxi requirements not to mention the proposed new fuel economy policy.

It can be noted that it was in the year 2005 when San Francisco became the first city to feature gas-electric hybrid-powered taxi cabs. San Francisco at that time chose Ford Escape Hybrid and later that year, New York City has also added a small fleet of Escape Hybrid taxis based on the decision approved by the New York City Council in connection wit the Clean Air Taxis Act. Then in June 2006, Ford embarked again on a nationwide tour promoting the benefits of the use of Escape Hybrids as a taxi service and since then both Chicago and Austin have introduced Escape Hybrids into their taxi fleets.

The fleet of 18 Escape Hybrid taxis in New York City has been able to accumulate hundreds of thousands of miles over the past two years and has been able to record an estimated fuel savings of $250,000. Today there are already 288 Escape Hybrids in taxi service throughout the city, and drivers are reporting that the hybrids are amazingly durable and their fuel-saving advantages are simply outstanding which makes them a great choice for taxis.

Facts on Ford Escape Hybrid  Ford Escape Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient SUV in the world: Its EPA rating is 34 miles per gallon for city driving. The front-wheel drive Escape Hybrid is the most fuel efficient SUV presently on earth and can provide drivers with 500 miles per tank of gas.

 A savings of $30 per shift: According to Paul Gillespie, a San Francisco cab driver, driving an Escape Hybrid has helped him save up to $30 per shift. He is working four shifts a week which saves him $120 and for a year more than $6,000 on gasoline.

 Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) Certified: The Escape Hybrid has significantly reduced smog-forming emissions as it meets the cleanest emissions standard available for a vehicle that make use of fossil fuels---particularly the California's AT-PZEV standard. The Escape Hybrid driving over 100,000 miles can conserve approximately 1,666 gallons of gas compared to a traditional cab and at the same time preventing 32,000 pounds of carbon emissions.

 Durability and Reliability: In terms of these qualities, the Escape Hybrid has proven its strength by surviving a round-the-clock durability test in one of the most severe driving conditions that any vehicle can possibly endure. This durability of the Escape Hybrid is backed by a standard 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty for unique hybrid components that includes the battery pack.

 Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner Hybrid were given high tax credits: The real world fuel economy of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids will increased for the 2008 model year and because of this the Federal income tax credits available now are $3,000 for FWD models which rose by $400 and $2,200 on 4WD models up by $250. Both Ford and Mercury Hybrids at present have the highest tax credit given to a hybrid vehicle. The tax credits given to Ford and Mercury have increased by $900 more than their closest competitor. For both vehicles the EPA-certified fuel economy for FWD models is 34 mpg for v\city and 30 mpg for highway while 29 mpg for city and 27 mpg highway for AWD models.

 Insurance discounts for Mercury Mariner Hybrids and Ford Escape Hybrids: Travelers which is one of the largest providers of personal insurance products in the US has offered hybrid drivers in the states of California, New Jersey, Texas, New York, Maryland, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, and Washington discounts of up to 10 percent ion certain coverage. The company has estimated that their hybrid policy business has grown by up to 200 percent last 2006.

The Beautiful Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe 1.8i

The Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupé 1.8i is one of the good-looking coupe-cabriolet available. And unlike any coupe-cabrios out there that are derived from a hatchback with a sort of weird looking elongated boot to accommodate the retractable metal roof, the MX-5 was designed from the very beginning as a two-seater convertible sports car. This also explains why it looks stunning with roof up or roof down.

However the MX-5 is not all just about fabulous looks. The MX-5 Roadster Coupe feels every inch a sports car with its rear-wheel drive, powerful engine, and direct steering which provides the car with a clean, spirited feeling as you sit low to the ground whiz through the traffic and round the bends.

The MX-5 Roadster is quick even if it is only equipped with a 1.8i and not the top-of-the-range 2.0i. And even with only entry-level specs the Roadster coupe still manages to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in under 9.6 seconds which is the result of having 124 bhp in a fairly light vehicle which is just 37 kg more than the soft-top version which is not entirely bad considering the weight of the metal roof together with all the associated mechanical gizmos and Mazda accessories that it has. Overall the MX-5 Roadster feels responsive and definitely not boring.

Mazda said that car's well balanced driving dynamics "reflect the Japanese ideal of Jinba Ittai, the symbiosis between rider and horse". This is exactly what I love about Mazda, the car is not weird but the theme is combined together produces one interesting vehicle.

The Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe appeals to both sexes and it's as good to drive as it is to look at. And by the way it only takes about 12 seconds to open and close the retractable hardtop. The price of the Roadster coupe is a little expensive. The entry-level model of the MX-5 Roadster Coupe starts at £18,530, which is slightly higher than that of the entry-level coupe-cabrios from Ford or Vauxhall and almost £4,000 more than the Peugeot 207 CC 1.6 or the Mitsubishi Colt CZC.

In addition every model in the MX-5 Roadster Coupe lineup will have an iPod® connectivity. The connection is found in the glovebox. The iPod® can be operated using the steering-wheel mounted audio controls. Owners can play their favorite tunes from their iPod® playlist through the car's audio system. The system is only compatible with Apple iPods® and not with other MP3 players. Likewise every MX-5 Roadster Coupe buyer will also be able to order a BOSE® SoundDock home iPod® docking station at 20 percent discount.

Customers may also choose from three powertrains that include 1.8i or 2.0i with 5-speed gearbox, 2.0i Sport with 6-speed gearbox plus a range of options and accessories to customize their cars. The MX-5 Roadster Coupe has also launched a special web site that offers customers a choice of all four 2 liter models---2.0i Option Pack, 2.0i Option Pack with Leather, 2.0i Sport and 2.0i Sport with BOSE®---in up to six colors.

All 2-liter models will feature side airbags while the dynamic stability control with traction control is made standard on 2.0i Option pack models and above. There are also six body colors to choose from including three Mica colors that comes in Stormy Blue, Copper Red, and Galaxy Grey also included is Sunlight Silver and two solid colors in Brilliant Black and True Red.

Most Expensive Ferrari Sold

Ferrari

The popularity of the Ferrari is known the world over. The Italian carmaker is known not only for building good looking cars with high performance but also for the price that these vehicles fetch. In fact the company's cheapest model has a base price of $150,000. When it comes to expensive cars, Ferrari just set a record for the most expensive Ferrari ever sold.

The sale came at an auction held in the marque's Italian assembly facility. Hosting the auction are the Canada-based RM Auctions Inc. and the trusted Sotheby's. The auction saw 33 classic Ferraris being auctioned off. The most expensive of the lot is the 1962 TRI/LM Testa Rossa Spyder. The said classic race car fetched a price of 6,875,000 euros or about $9.275 million. While the car became the most expensive Ferrari ever sold, it is not the most expensive car sold in an auction. That distinction belongs to a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royal Sports Coupe which was sold for $11 million.

The Testa Rossa Spyder is said to be the world's most famous race car since it was used by Ferrari in the 24-hour Le Mans. The dominance of the car of the said prestigious racing event spanned from the late 1950s to the early 60s. The car sold at the auction for the record price is the last of its kind which is one reason why the price reached more than $9 million. The particular model is the last Ferrari race car to have its engine in the front and it was driven by Phil Hil and Oliver Glendebien at the Le Mans in 1962. Aside from that particular car, the auction also sold classic Ferrari cars which earned the Italian car manufacturer more than $46 million.

Other Ferrari cars sold during the auction, which would put to shame any production vehicle even if equipped with Kleen Wheels accessories, includes a 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione which fetched a price of 4,235,000 euros. The said classic Ferrari is the second most expensive Ferrari sold during the auction. Another classic car sold at the public sale is a 1970 Ferrari 512 S which was sold for 2,640,000 euros. A 1953 Ferrari 340 MM Competition Spyder was sold at the auction for the price of 2,310,000 euros. Another Ferrari classic which was sold at the auction is a 1966 Ferrari Dino 206 SP which was sold for a whopping 2,420,000 euros. Another expensive Ferrari car sold is the 2003 Ferrari F2003-GA Formula 1 Grand Prix Car which was driven by Michael Schumacher during his stint with Scuderia Ferrari. The car was sold for 1,540,000 euros or almost $2 million.

Of the 33 cars that were auctioned, only one car was not sold and it was a 1987 Ferrari F40 Prototipo.

Aside from the mentioned cars, Ferrari also auctioned off different car-related merchandise like a 2005 Ferrari steering wheel which was sold for $85,000. Compare that to a brand new Chevy Aveo which has a starting price of $9,455 and you will see how expensive Ferraris are. The Italian car manufacturer also auctioned off a 2004 V10 engine which was sold at $62,000. A matching 2004 engine cover was also sold at the auction which fetched a price of $12,500. An autographed Schumacher helmet was sold for $30,000 while a racing suit worn by the German Formula One driver fetched a price of $28,000. Current Ferrari Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen's racing suit was also auctioned off and was sold for $8,500. And perhaps the oddest things auctioned off were a set of Felipe Massa's under-clothes which was sold for $775.

Ford Mondeo deemed allergy free

For anybody that suffers with environmental allergies, spring and summer can be brutal. Dust mites and pollen can wreak havoc on sinus cavities, ears, and eyes whether inside or outside your car. Many automakers have taken precautions to help minimize the pain of allergy sufferers, and Ford seems to have gotten the formula down... at least in Europe.

The soon to be available for purchase Ford Mondeo has received the coveted "Allergy-tested seal of approval" from the German TÜV Rhineland group. The vehicle earned this honor as the result of eliminating materials like chrome and nickel from the cockpit, using low-emission adhesives, and allergen-tested textiles and leathers. The Mondeo also has a high-tech pollen filter that eliminates pollen from the air. Ford's newest example of Kinetic design joins the Focus, Ka, S-MAX and Galaxy as the only vehicles on earth to earn TÜV allergy certification.

For whatever reason, Ford's Euro-lineup always seems to be better-looking and more richly-appointed than what we can get here in the States, and we're often left wanting. Now even those with allergies are left with something to sneeze at. We know, that was bad. The press release is available after the jump.

How to Guard Against the Dangers of Automobile Emissions

Even the most efficient car wouldn't work in an ideal way in which its engine would produce only energy, carbon dioxide, and water. Because the fact is, cars often produce a toxic cloud of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and other harmful pollutants, which foul the air and pose a very real danger to public health. When exposed to auto exhaust, healthy people can suffer from lowered immunity, impaired cognitive function, and difficulty breathing. Infants, the elderly, and those with heart and lung ailments are particularly vulnerable.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is debilitating and potentially fatal. Smokers, those with anemia, and patients with congestive heart failure are at risk. Nitrogen oxides give smog its brownish hue. They can irritate the eyes and lungs; lower immunity to such respiratory ills as colds and bronchitis; and worsen asthma and allergy symptoms. Ground-level ozone (not that of the upper atmosphere's ozone layer), a major component of smog, is produced in abundance on hot, sunny days. It can make breathing difficult, irritate the respiratory tract, and produce coughing and chest pain. There are also microscopic particles (a fraction of the width of a human hair) that can penetrate the lungs and build up over time, causing lung infections, asthma, and chronic lung disease.

Here's how to guard against the dangers of these gases from automobile exhaust:

- Have your car's exhaust system regularly inspected for leaks by a reliable mechanic.

- Never let the car's engine run in a closed garage. Before starting your car in an attached garage, shut the door to the house.

- Even when outside, open a window when sitting in a parked car with the engine running.

- When driving in traffic, crack open your car windows even if you're running the air conditioner.

- When starting your car after a snowstorm, make sure the tailpipe is not blocked by snow.

- Become familiar with the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. They include dizziness, severe headache, fatigue, agitation, stupor, pale skin, and coma.

- If severe poisoning occurs, get the victim into fresh air immediately. Call 911 (or have someone else call) to ask for emergency medical help. If the person has no pulse and is not breathing, perform CPR (but only if you are properly trained). If the person does have a pulse but is not breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Many major cities in the United States and Canada continue to be inundated by noxious clouds of smog. The problem, in a nutshell, is too many cars. To complicate matters, light trucks, minivans, and sport utility vehicles have grown in popularity. These vehicles are allowed higher emissions because they are designed to carry heavier loads. Nonautomotive vehicles, such as lawn mowers and motorboats, also generate city smog. Research shows that mowing your lawn for an hour with a gas-powered mower creates as much pollution as driving 50 miles (80 kilometers) in your car.

MIT, General Motors, Motorola Collaborate On Stackable Cars

The concept of a city--and how cars affect it--is the focus of a study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Called the "Smart Cities Concept Cars", the program has
designers looking into new designs of cars.

One concept, for example, removes the drivetrain and puts them in the car wheels. Basically, the motor, steering, braking, suspension and computer are housed in each wheel which is designed for a rotation of 150 degrees, or if independent from the car, a full 360 degrees.

Another concept being looked at is called the "stackable car". The cars get their names from their collapsible frames and other innovations. An electric car that sits at charging stations throughout a city, the stackable cars are linked to each other like the sections of a caterpillar. When a "user" (not driver) needs a car, they schedule a time to use such a vehicle, then go to the station to pick up a car. After they're finished, they simply drop it off at the nearest station to be recharged and for the next user.

Other plans include solar panels (to charge the batteries at the station), energy from windmills, and hydrogen fuel.

The study is being sponsored by General Motors, Motorola and MIT.

Our take? We know the "electric wheels cars" are currently being pursued by other automakers. Realistically, fuel technologies that provide alternatives to gasoline are most likely to be seen in production in the upcoming years, while other technologies, like the stations, are either still dreams or will find limited use.

UAW Assures Members That Chrysler Pensions Are Safe

Employee pensions are being affected adversely during these times of increased worldwide competition in the automobile industry.

So a sale of an automaker from one owner to another doesn't necessarily spark concern.

However, the sale of Chrysler from DaimlerChrysler to Cerberus, a private equity firm, did cause anxiety among United Auto Worker members. UAW president Ron Gettelfinger (pictured) and vice president General Holefield told union members that the Chrysler pension is $2 billion overfunded and that its benefits are secure. Cerberus, apparently, was committed also to providing an additional $200 million to the pension while former owner Daimler provides a conditional guarantee of $1 billion for up to five years.

Gettelfinger and Holefield also address the issue of the reduction of the hourly workforce beyond the plan cuts of 13,000 members that Chrysler had announced earlier this year. They reassured members there were no plans by Cerberus to exceed that number.

Volvo and Pirates of the Caribbean give Clue on Tattoo Man

IRVINE, Calif. (May 21, 2007) - You may not recognize this man, but to thousands of treasure hunters tired of staring at his semi-naked body, he's standing in the way of $50,000 and a key to a new Volvo.

"Tattoo Man" holds the answer to puzzle number four in Volvo's online treasure hunt at volvocars.us/thehunt, a promotion celebrating Disney's new movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Or rather, the longitude and latitude coordinates to the next destination in The Hunt are right there in front of you, revealed in the tattoos covering his body. Simple, right? Wrong.

While thousands of people have solved the puzzle using Thai and Chinese numerical systems - and even shared the solution on The Hunt's unofficial blog - many other intrepid online hunters have been stumped, provoking blog comments like:

* "I have been looking at the tattooed man all night, my wife thinks I have a serious problem"
* "Anyone want to help an eye tired person for the 1/2 naked man? I'm ready to reach thru and make him all naked!"
* "My eyeballs are about to pop out...I have never stared at a half naked man this long."

So, Volvo is relenting, just this once, to give people a clue.

"We never promised this would be easy, there's booty at stake after all," said Linda Gangeri, national advertising manager at Volvo Cars of North America. "Tattoo Man is just one in a series of 22 puzzles that expose people to different languages and cultures, taking them on a journey which so far has included Cuba, the Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon and Singapore. But, maybe he is a little too tough for so early in the game. So, here's a clue. The coordinates are spread out across the man's body, from head to toe - right shoulder, chest, under his navel, left and right thighs and under his left knee. Use the other, complete number strings to translate them into a longitude-latitude combination such as 1234-5678..."

Got that?

If you think you can take on the Tattoo Man and the other 21 puzzles, there's still time to join The Hunt and catch up! Participants 18 and older must visit a Volvo retailer to pick up a special pirate chart then register at volvocars.us/thehunt any time between now and May 29. Winners will only be eligible if they can produce the original pirate chart upon conclusion of The Hunt. On June 2, the first person from each of the 22 participating markets to finish the online hunt will compete against one another in one final exciting online challenge.

The first of those 22 individuals to solve the final puzzle will be named the winner and will receive a trip to the burial location to retrieve the chest filled with $50,000 in gold and a key to a new Volvo XC90.

2008 Ford F-450 Completes America's Toughest Road Test

SAN ANTONIO, May 18, 2007 -- The new 2008 F-Series Super Duty will go down in history after completing Bold Endures: America's Toughest Road Test, the longest non-stop test ever recorded, after logging the final mile of a 150,000-mile adventure earlier this month. The historic journey, part of a massive marketing launch, adds to the 10 million miles of testing that brought about America's most capable truck.

A trained team of drivers led the effort in the 2008 Ford Super Duty F-450 -- the first-ever Class 4 pickup -- across 49 states, including Alaska and the District of Columbia, and seven Canadian provinces while always towing a massive trailer. This innovative truck can tow up to 24,500 pounds, 8,000 pounds more than the nearest competitor.

"Ford tests F-Series trucks to the extremes so customers can take on the toughest jobs every day," says Ben Poore, Ford truck group marketing manager. "The Bold Endures road test highlights how the new Super Duty Ford F-450 pickup raised this bar so customers can work and play harder."

The team drove cross-country averaging 1,145 miles a day in all types of terrains and conditions, including temperatures ranging between minus 18 ? F and more than 100 ? F. The team recorded many impressive feats, including:

* Continually towed a 40-foot triple-axle trailer loaded with up to 18,000 pounds for 150,000 miles
* Towed at least 12,000 pounds at all times
* Towed an 18,000-pound trailer -- a weight no other heavy-duty truck is rated to tow -- 100,579 miles (88 days)
* Drove in elevations from 100 feet below sea level to 9,000 feet above sea level
* Drove an average of 1,145 miles per day, including at least 1,000 miles in a 24-hour period 84 times and an amazing 1,537 miles in one 24-hour period

Built Ford Tough Across America

The Bold Endures road test began in Phoenix in December 2006 and traveled across the country 24-hours a day, seven days a week only stopping f or routine maintenance. Ford will continue touring the truck around the country and is working with the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich. to secure the truck's place in history next to other road warriors such as the motorhome Charles Kuralt drove across the country to help tell fascinating American stories.

"Everywhere we went across North America, people gave us thumbs up and told us their Ford truck tales," says Bob Hunt of Michigan, one of the Bold Endures team members who drove the truck across the country. "I think we've proven with the Bold Endures test that the Ford Super Duty is more than ready for any challenge."

The Bold Endures effort is one of three unique, real-world consumer tests Ford conducted after the new Super Duty's 10-million-mile testing regimen was completed. Ford selected 'Team Tough,' a group of 12 truck customers, to test the new 2008 F-Series Super Duty because they hold down some of the toughest jobs around the country. Ford also partnered with a BP Alaskan oil crew in the "North Slope Tough" test to put the truck through extreme Arctic conditions in the middle of winter.

Consumers can learn more about each of these tests and the new truck at www.InsideSuperDuty.com. Ford will soon compile highlights of the Bold Endures trek into a webisode on the site.
Ford Trucks Ride PBR's Fast Rise

The Bold Endures team makes their first extended stop after completing the ambitious road test at the "toughest sport on dirt," the first Professional Bull Riders rodeo at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Ford trucks are the title sponsor of the Built Ford Tough series, the premier PBR series. Ford is leveraging the partnership to help launch the new 2008 F-Series Super Duty as part of a massive marketing campaign. Celebrating with Ford at San Antonio's first-ever PBR event are more than 8,000 military men and women from three major San Antonio-area military bases that received tickets from the South Texas Ford Dealers.

PBR is the fastest growing sport in terms of television audience and is expanding into major markets across North America, including new Built Ford Tough Series events in New York City and San Antonio in 2007.

The PBR Built Ford Tough Series showcases the 45 toughest bull riders and bulls in the world, helping it earn the title "the toughest sport on dirt." Get Better TV Reception, No Matter Where You Are

(ARA) - Today nearly 8 million U.S. households own at least one recreational vehicle (RV) -- a 15 percent increase over the past four years and a startling 58 percent rise since 1980, according to a new study by the University of Michigan Survey Research Center. One in 12 U.S. vehicle-owning households now own at least one RV.

Whether you enjoy using your RV for tailgating, camping, cross country travel or all of the above, you are probably familiar with the typical fuzzy reception, poor sound, interference and limited channels you get with your RV’s TV. It detracts from a normally fun, relaxing situation and you don’t have to put up with it anymore.

These days, using a batwing antenna for your TV reception is outdated. Times have changed and you can now get a clear picture, better sound and more channels with a Digital HD Receiver.

Winegard’s Digital HD Receiver provides the clearest image available and DVD-quality sound using your analog TV and crank-up antenna. The compact receiver connects easily between your antenna and your TV to deliver crystal clear digital channels.

“Currently, broadcast television stations are required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to simulcast both analog and digital over-the-air signals,” says Shawn Rubel, ecommerce marketing manager at Camping World. "In February 2009 all analog television signal transmissions will end and analog TVs will then require a receiver to convert digital over-the-air signals to analog signals that older TVs can display. The Winegard Digital HD Receiver can be used in your RV and at home with no monthly fees.”

Besides getting a clearer picture and better sound, the advantages of using a digital receiver are abundant. You also get increased programming choices -- such as the local channels (wherever you are in your RV), including additional programming such as weather, news, special features, movies, children’s programs and sports -- as well as HDTV compatibility for use with HD-capable TVs.

To watch a video with more information about the Wingard Digital HD Receiver and to purchase one, visit www.campingworld.com/godigital.

Five Great Motorcycle Accessories for Under $100

When you're thinking of getting a new accessory for your motorcycle, things can quickly get expensive. Many of the most popular accessories like a custom suspension or exhaust system can easily cost you several hundred dollars plus the installation headaches.

But there are more than a few handy accessories available for your bike for under a hundred dollars. And some are well under $100. If you've got the itch to buy some new bike gear, here are five ideas that will enhance your riding without putting you in the poor house.

1. Saddlebags

Because they are so handy, saddlebags are the first accessory I get for a new bike. Saddlebags are essential for the long rides but also great for quick trips to the store. Even the smallest saddlebags can save you from cramming all your stuff uncomfortably into your pants pockets or riding jacket.

Many folks don't realize you can get decent saddlebags for as little as $50. Smaller, throw-over saddlebags that hang from the seat or rear fender and do not require support brackets. I recommend synthetic materials over leather as they are more weather resistant and are typically less expensive than genuine leather models.

2. Tool bags

An inexpensive but significantly smaller alternative to a full set of saddlebags, good-quality tool bags are available for under $50. Having a few essential tools on the road can be a real lifesaver for you and your riding buddies. Most tool bags mount to the front forks or sissy bars with hook and loop straps that most manufacturers include with purchase. Like full-sized saddlebags, I feel the best-value tool bags are made of synthetic leather.

Look for tool bags that are designed with reinforced plastic so they maintain their shape over the long haul. And keep your gear secure by looking for tool bags that include lockable buckles - many of the $50 models I've come across are the lockable variety.

3. Gas Tank Chaps/Bibs

A great way to complement the look of your new saddlebags, tanks chaps quickly add a custom look to your bike. Tank chaps fit under your gas cap or tank speedometer and rear tank mounting hardware. Almost all models have a scratch-resistant backing that will not harm your bike's paint.

Tanks chaps are available in genuine or synthetic leather, are a snap to install and are custom fit for each bike's tank shape. Many also include a small storage pouch for your phone, wallet or keys. Most tank chaps are priced between $50 and $100.

4. Custom Brake & Clutch Levers

Aftermarket bike levers gives you a real bang for your buck. For around $20, you can get a new pair of custom chrome or alloy finish levers designed to fit your model bike. In addition to adding a custom look, custom levers are much more comfortable than stock levers. The wider design is easier on your fingers, especially if you're ever caught in stop and go traffic. For about the cost of a takeout dinner, you really can't go wrong with a new pair of aftermarket levers.

5. Chrome Side Covers

Add a healthy dose of chrome to your bike without picking-up a single wrench. Chrome side covers look great and replace the standard painted covers in a snap. The only catch is the covers are one of the more expensive accessories on our list - with prices starting at $95.

Side covers are designed specifically for each make and model bike and are typically sold in pairs. A great add-on if you're looking for a custom part that offers instant gratification.

Nissan Celebrates Ten Years of Production in Decherd

Nissan North America reached a milestone recently when its powertrain assembly facility located in Decherd, Tennessee celebrated its tenth year of production. At the celebration of the decade long existence of the assembly facility, Nissan executives, state and local officials and the facilities’ employees gathered together.

The assembly facility started production on the 16th of May in 1997. From its humble beginnings, the factory is now currently being regarded as one of the biggest engine plants in all of Nissan’s facilities across the world. Currently, the facility has 1,200 employees who are tasked with assembling different engines for Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The said facility produces 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder engines. Aside from the engines produced for Nissan and Infiniti vehicles built in the United States, the assembly facility also produces small quantity of truck engines which are then delivered to a manufacturing facility in Barcelona, Spain.

In a year, the engine production facility can produce 950,000 engines and 1.1 million crankshaft forgings. Nissan though is still in the process of expanding this facility as it plans to task the facility with producing cylinder block castings by the spring of 2008. Other Nissan parts such as Nissan engine mounts, suspension assembly and the likes are manufactured in other facilities.

Bill Krueger, the NNA Senior Vice-President of Manufacturing, Purchasing and Supply Chain Management for the Americas, has this to say: “Throughout its 10-year history, the Decherd Plant has proven that it's a world-class operation capable of producing award-winning products. The Decherd team has good reason to be proud of their accomplishments today. The growth of this plant has been based on a solid reputation for high quality work and proven capabilities. As we celebrate a history of achievement, we also look forward to what the future will bring as we compete in the global marketplace.”

Also present at the celebration is Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen who lauded the efforts of the plant workers and the positive impact of the facility to the State of Tennessee said: “This plant not only makes engines, but it is itself an economic engine in our state's economy. Nissan and its employees in Decherd and throughout the state have been a driving force in the development of Tennessee's automotive sector. I congratulate the entire Decherd team on 10 years of consistent growth.”

The facility first made it to the headlines when Nissan announced that they will be putting up an engine plant in Decherd. The announcement came on the 18th of January in 1991. Four years after the announcement, construction of the facility started on March 1995. Nissan invested $30 million for the original plants which occupies an area of 100,000 square feet. Currently, the facility is estimated to be worth $683 million. Throughout the ten years since its opening, the plant has been expended to increase production and it now occupies 1.2 million square foot of land area in Decherd. From its opening until today, it is reported that more than 3.8 million engines have already been produced at the said facility.

One of the most notable engines produced by the plant is the award-winning 3.5-liter VQ V6 engine. The said powerplant is the only engine to be named as one of Ward’s “Ten Best Engines” since the list was first introduced.

More Hellfire From Ford Boycotters

Is the Ford Motor Company the “top pro-homosexual sponsor” on all of network television? That’s what the American Family Association said this week.

But wait. Didn’t the A.F.A. — which began to boycott Ford in 2005 over its longstanding practice of advertising in gay media — declare recently that it had prevailed in its effort to persuade Ford to drop the ads? Yes, it did.

In fact, on March 2 the A.F.A., based in Tupelo, Miss., said that Ford seemed to be dropping its advertising in “homosexual magazines” because it “has felt the impact of the boycott, and this is their way out to save face.”

Soon after, on March 4, the A.F.A. said that its boycott was why Ford had not sponsored the GLAAD Media Awards, which honor mainstream media for positive portrayals of gays. “Homosexual activists are seeing that the days of Ford promoting their agenda are drawing to a close,” the Rev. Donald E. Wildmon, the A.F.A. chairman, said in a written statement at the time.

Never mind that Ford said the boycott had nothing to do with the decision not to sponsor the event (a company spokeswoman told The Detroit News it was a matter of finances), or that Ford didn’t rule out sponsoring it in the future.

This wasn’t the first time the A.F.A. has made somewhat dubious assertions about the effectiveness of its boycott, which the organization claims has 650,000 supporters. For instance, the A.F.A. has attributed Ford’s slumping sales and financial losses to the group’s anti-Ford actions. In January, it released a statement carrying the headline, “A.F.A. says boycott contributed to Ford’s $12.7 billion loss.” Of course, all the Detroit automakers are in financial trouble. General Motors lost $2 billion last year; Chrysler lost $1.5 billion. Neither company is being boycotted by the A.F.A., which seems to have made Ford a particular target of its ire.

This week, in announcing that Ford was the most “pro-homosexual sponsor,” the group said it had determined that the automaker advertised on shows featuring a gay character more than any other network television sponsor. The group’s analysis, which it said took place from Feb. 11 through May 5, looked at eight shows including “The Office” on NBC, “Ugly Betty” on ABC and “The Simpsons” on Fox. Two other automakers were singled out in the analysis as “supportive of the homosexual lifestyle,” Toyota and DaimlerChrysler. Also making the list were Revlon and Quaker Foods.

Meanwhile, Gaywheels.com announced that a G.M. division, Saturn, would be its co-sponsor of Gay Days Orlando from May 29 to June 4. Gay Days Orlando includes visits to Disney attractions in the area; in 2005, the A.F.A. ended a boycott of Disney even though the company had not yielded on issues raised by the group. At the time, Tim Wildmon, the A.F.A. president and son of its founder, said, “We feel after nine years of boycotting Disney we have made our point.”

The Top Driving Distractions

For most car owners, their vehicles become the extension of their homes, offices, and all other places in between. You see, this is very evident in the fact that once you do get inside a vehicle, you would find various stuff like books, papers, clothes, shoes, and all other various things.

However, experts in the industry are saying that such items could actually bring with them some kind of distraction for the driver. After all, we all do know that driving is a task that needs one’s total concentration and attention. And the statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) say that with drivers doing multitasking and having their attention divided upon the various number of things that they need to attend to, the numbers of crashes could surely go up and would not lessen down. Just imagine that the driver would be like a Volvo performance chip that has got tons of information loaded it would take some time to recognize one task after another.

Edmunds.com shares with its reading public some of the top driving distractions that drivers do face each day - especially if their vehicles become the extension not only of their homes but also of their schools or offices or other hobbies for that matter.

Talking with friends or other passengers is one top driving distraction and it is very applicable especially to younger drivers. This is because many drivers do tend to focus more on the topic at hand than on the road ahead.

The use of your mobile phone is also a driving distraction. And experts do say that it does not matter if you are using a headset, a hands-free set or using one of your hands to fidget with your gadget. Of course, sending SMS messages applies, too. One grand piece of advice would be to keep that mobile phone away and check on it when you are already safely parked.

Your radio is also a distraction. Of course we do know that playing your favorite songs while doing your driving could help you be relaxed during your travel, did you know that when you do take that couple of seconds to change your CD, you are actually endangering yourself and your passengers? Yes, experts suggest that it is better off for you to tune in to a radio station instead of playing a CD.

Their vehicle often defines their lifestyle.

Bills Piling Up? Refinancing Your Car Puts Extra Cash In Your Pocket

(ARA) - Sometimes life throws you a curve ball. The water heater springs a leak, your son breaks a tooth or you need a plane ticket to visit a sick relative. These unplanned expenses add up and if you don’t have savings to cover them, where will the extra payments come from?

One way to come up with some extra cash is to refinance your car with RateGenius. The company offers a variety of refinancing options; if you qualify, you may be able to skip car payments for a minimum of 45 days and as long as 90 days, giving you time to catch up on those expenses.

“You get a new lender when you refinance for an existing loan, which often means you get a better rate,” explains Chris Brown, CEO of RateGenius. “With a new loan you can skip a few payments, add or remove a co-applicant if you have one, add products (such as GAP insurance and extended warranties) and extend the payment term.”

Auto loan refinancing is very similar to refinancing a home mortgage, with one exception -- the title transfer fee. Other than this one charge that’s required by law, there are no costs for the consumer. “There are a lot of fees associated with a mortgage refinance,” explains Chris Brown, CEO of RateGenius. “There are closing costs, points, inspection costs and a loan origination fee. Those fees can really add up and eat away at the financial benefits of refinancing. RateGenius does not charge a fee for our service.”

It takes just a few minutes to apply for auto refinancing at www.RateGenius.com, or over the phone via the company’s toll free number, (866) 439-5533. A loan adviser then compares offers from the company’s network of lenders to find the best deal for your individual situation. RateGenius has partnered with numerous lending institutions that provide customers with one of the most financially stable and diverse lending networks in the industry. The entire process can be completed in less than 72 hours.

The savings consumers see will vary, but can be substantial. For example, if you have a $30,000 loan payable over 60 months at 12.5 percent interest, your monthly payment will be $674.95. By refinancing with RateGenius at a new interest rate of 7.5 percent, your monthly payment will drop to $601.14.

RateGenius has been in business since 1999 and has brokered over 32,000 loans. To find out how much you can save, visit www.RateGenius.com or call (866) 439-5533.

President George W. Bush Drives Bandwagon to Cull Gas Use

President Bush appears to be on the bandwagon for conservation reports Marketplace. The reaction is not surprising, following in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision saying that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can regulate greenhouse gases. Bush has directed the secretaries of Transportation, Agriculture, and as well as the newly-empowered EPA to create a plan to encourage the use of alternative fuels that would cut pollution by the end of 2008. He has also asked the members of his cabinet to come up with ways to cut gas consumption in the United States by 20 percent within 10 years.

Some environmentalists are skeptical. They believe that the Bush Administration is actually delaying a remedy to the global warming issue. One environmentalist, Darren Lovaas of the Natural Resources Defense Council, pointed out that the Congress is already considering legislation that would encourage the manufacturing of more efficient cars and alternative fuels. And the states have already been pushing for permission from the federal government to regulate more on air pollution. (Basically, Bush's pronouncements already back up the status quo.)

Our take? We're with the environmentalists on this one. It's the results that we want to know more about, Mr. President, not a reiteration of the same plan.

Daimler to go it alone after Chrysler deal

FRANKFURT - DaimlerChrysler will do its best to stay independent once the sale of U.S. arm Chrysler goes through, Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche was quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying.

The paper reported on Thursday that Zetsche had said in an interview that the company, to be known in future as Daimler AG if shareholders approve, probably will not be involved in big deals for other carmakers.

DaimlerChrysler announced on Monday it would sell an 80.1 percent stake in Chrysler Group to private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, unwinding the 1998 merger of Daimler-Benz and Chrysler that never worked out as planned.

Zetsche said the company might seek deals to expand its truck business, especially in the U.S. or India, the paper reported.

On Wednesday, United Auto Workers leaders said they have received assurances that Chrysler pensions will be protected when the company is sold to Cerberus later this year.

In an online chat with union members, union President Ron Gettelfinger and Vice President General Holiefield said Chrysler’s pension plan is $2 billion overfunded and that its benefits are secure.

“Additionally, Cerberus has committed to contributing an additional $200 million to the pension fund and Daimler is providing a conditional guarantee of $1 billion for up to five years,” they wrote.

One member questioned Gettelfinger on why he vehemently opposed a private equity firm buying Chrysler a few weeks before the sale, then changed his stance once the Cerberus deal was announced on Monday.

Gettelfinger replied that his stance changed when the sale became reality and when he was told by the companies that keeping Chrysler with Daimler was not possible.

“Both General and I, as well as the International Executive Board, believe that this outcome will be to the benefit of our active and retired membership,” Gettelfinger wrote. “In time, we hope you will come to feel the same way. In the meantime, its time for us to close this chapter and move forward.”
Gettelfinger and Holiefield said Chrysler’s long-term health care liability for retirees is in the billions of dollars, but is part of a bigger health care crisis in America.

Chrysler executives, as well as those from Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp., have said they need to cut that liability in order to reduce costs and better compete with Asian automakers. All have said the liabilities will be on the table when they bargain with the UAW on a national contract later this year. Chrysler’s obligation is estimated at $19 billion.

“There is tremendous liability in projected health care costs for retirees,” Gettelfinger and Holiefield wrote. “America’s health care crisis is out of control and that’s why the UAW supports a national, single-payer, comprehensive national health care plan for every man, woman and child. We cannot solve the health care crisis in any one set of negotiations with any one company.”

The two also reassured members that Cerberus had no plans to reduce the hourly work force beyond the 13,000 that Chrysler announced on Feb. 14 a part of its restructuring plan.

The UAW, the two said, received a commitment in writing that said: “Excluding abnormal market conditions and productivity, there are no additional job cuts in connection with the transaction announced.”

Exhaust systems in Honda SUVs faulty, blamed for fires

The plaintiff, Springfield resident Hal Pilger, brought the suit against American Honda Motor Corporation after his 2003 Honda CR-V burst into flames while he was driving it.

The suit notes that the exhaust manifold and the oil filter are positioned dangerously close to each other, and the fact that the oil filter is mounted vertically results in cases where leaking oil can spray over an extremely hot exhaust manifold, thus creating the potential for fires. Honda denies these allegations, saying that any fires that erupted were due to improper fitting of the oil filter, although it does admit that in complying with new emission-control regulations since 2002, it increased significantly the temperatures in the exhaust manifold and intake pipes, which could exacerbate the problem if oil is spraying directly on the manifold.

Various readers of the ConsumerAffairs.com website have reported similar incidents, including Matt from Columbus, Ohio, who encountered a memorable sight on his way to work one morning in October of 2004:

"In morning daylight, 8:30 AM, 50 degree temperature in Columbus Ohio, I was astonished to see a Honda CRV traveling at 65 mph beside me on the freeway with its exhaust system glowing so brightly I first mistook it for an orange neon lighting system."

"The first thing that came to mind was 'this poor guy's car is going to catch on fire,'" he recalled.

Honda is now blaming these problems on what it calls the "double gasket" theory, explaining in a letter sent in December 2004 to CR-V owners that the rubber gasket of the oil filter tends to remain stuck in the engine block (and presumably is not noticed immediately by a mechanic removing the oil filter). Because the old gasket is stuck in there, the new oil filter is not sealed properly, and that can cause oil to leak out and spray all over the super-hot exhaust manifold, creating a lot of heat and the potential for fires.

The suit asks the court to award damages to owners of vehicles which were affected by the engine fires, and to launch a campaign to recall and repair affected vehicles.

Our take? As always, we err on the side of caution. If you have one of the affected vehicles, contact your dealership--and Honda--immediately.

The Consequences of Not Having Auto Insurance

When young adults graduate college they have aspirations of starting their first "real world" job, getting their own place and buying a brand new car - one that does not need a screwdriver to start. However, college students are also graduating with much more than just a college degree and a dream, they are graduating with a substantial amount of debt. In fact, many students graduate with an average of $3,262 in credit card debt - 10 percent of that group owing more than $7,000 in credit card charges.

Students forget to factor in other life costs, such as health care, 401K deductions, income taxes, car payments, auto insurance, rent, utility bills, student loans, credit card bills and food expenses into their monthly budget. "After you graduate and land your first job, you do not think about having to pay for all of these expenses," stated a graduate from Ohio University. "Unfortunately, reality sets in pretty fast and you realize you do not have the money to make ends meet - it is a hard lesson to learn!"

College Debt
Why is there so much credit card debt among college students? "Many credit card companies set up kiosks on college campuses offering free pizzas and t-shirts to try and entice students to sign up for a credit card," noted David Roush, CEO of Insurance.com. "The problem is many college students do not have the income or financial knowledge to manage a credit card - a problem that is leading students into a lifetime of financial despair."

In addition to the outrageous credit card bills, students are also graduating with student loans ranging from $10,000 to $52,000 or more. Often students figure they will be able to pay everything off once they get a job and start making "real" money, but that simply is not the case.

Not only are credit card and student loan bills financially crippling to many new graduates, it is also forcing grads to cut back on other necessary expenses, such as auto insurance - one bill you legally cannot drive without! "Driving without auto insurance is illegal in all 50 states, however, many young adults elect to go without auto insurance because they think they cannot afford to have it," stated Roush. "A scary thought when 15.3% of all automobile accidents are caused by drivers between the ages of 20 - 24."

While deciding not to pay for auto insurance may seem like a good idea at the time, graduates are not considering the expense of getting caught without auto insurance or the cost of getting into an automobile accident. "Imagine if you had to pay the medical bills of someone who gets injured in car accident when you are at fault - suddenly paying for car insurance does not seem so bad," says Roush.

The Penalty of Driving Without Auto Insurance
According to the Insurance Information Institute, the cost of driving without auto insurance can vary from state to state, depending on the percentage of drivers who are uninsured in that state. For instance, in Massachusetts residents can be charged anywhere from $500 to $5,000 in fines and receive a one-year jail sentence. In Florida, Louisiana, Connecticut and New Jersey, drivers operating a vehicle without the state required minimum will have their vehicles impounded - which can cost you thousands depending on how long it takes you to get your car out.

To find out the auto insurance state minimum and fines and penalties for driving without insurance in your state, visit the Department of Motor Vehicles' website.

How to Budget For Auto Insurance
As you look for auto insurance, make sure to check if the insurer offers a 6-month or 12-month payment plan to help you manage your auto insurance payments better. In addition, many auto insurance providers offer a variety of discounts, including alumni discounts. So make sure to ask if your college or university is eligible for a discount, because every bit helps when you are first starting out on your own.

2009 Honda Hybrid: Electricity Gets Cheap

That's when Honda Motor Co. expects to unveil a new entry-level hybrid.

According to Automotive News (via Autoblog), the hybrid is expected to be priced above the entry-level Honda Fit and below the current Honda Civic hybrid. That's between $15,000 to $22,000. The company plans to sell 200,000 of them a year, 14,000 more than the number of Toyota Priuses sold worldwide in 2006.

In addition, Honda UK announced that it will be producing a hybrid sports coupe.

Few details on this hybrid has been released. Honda most likely, though, style it similar to the Remix concept (pictured) unveiled at last year's Los Angeles Auto Show. Our take is that Honda has its eyes set on Toyota and hopes to challenge its rival Japanese brother in the hybrid market.

Refinance Your Auto Loan and Ease a Tight Budget

(ARA) - Living from paycheck to paycheck can be very stressful when unexpected emergency situations happen. You have to squeeze some extra money out of your budget, but where is it going to come from? When these situations arise, auto refinancing could turn your circumstances around to your advantage.

By refinancing your auto loan, you could get a lower interest rate and a lower monthly payment. Customers who apply for auto refinancing through companies such as RateGenius Loan Services can potentially see a great savings in their monthly budget. RateGenius customers, on average, reduce their interest rate an average of 3.67 percent from their previous interest rate, and an average of $65 off their existing monthly auto payment. This type of savings frees up money for you to pay for a crisis or to put into an emergency-only savings account, making the unexpected a lot less stressful.

“Many people don’t realize that you can refinance your auto loan just like you can refinance your mortgage,” says company CEO Chris Brown. “In fact, auto loan refinancing works very much like home refinancing, with one big difference -- with the exception of a title transfer fee required by law, there are no costs for the consumer.”

Auto loan payments are generally a bigger percentage of your budget. Refinancing will give you the advantage you have been searching for -- to pay less for something you already have -- and there isn’t even a charge for the service.

“You get a new lender when you refinance for an existing loan, which often means you get a better rate,” explains Brown. “With a new loan you can skip a few payments, add or remove a co-applicant if you have one, add products (such as GAP insurance and extended warranties) and extend the payment term.”

It only takes a few minutes to apply for auto refinancing, either by visiting www.rateGenius.com, or over the phone toll free at (866) 439-5533. A loan adviser then compares offers from the company’s network of lenders to find the best deal for your individual situation. RateGenius has partnered with numerous lending institutions that provide customers with one of the most financially stable and diverse lending networks in the industry. The entire process can be completed in 24 to 48 hours.

In some cases, the company is able to arrange loans that allow up to 90 days with no payments. Imagine three months without a car payment -- money you can use to fix your daughter’s tooth, for the surgery your dog needs from eating the hallway rug, or the new water heater.

The savings you could see vary, but can be substantial. For example, if you have a $30,000 loan payable over 60 months at 12.5 percent interest, your monthly payment will be $674.95. By refinancing with rateGenius at a new interest rate of 7.5 percent, your monthly payment will drop to $601.14.

“Your process and customer service was excellent,” says J. Cottrell, a customer from Arlington, Texas. “I would rate your service a 10. The turn around time of my package and willingness to answer my questions really bolstered my confidence that I was with a first class organization. If I ever have another refinancing need or could refer you future business, I will.”

The company has been in business since 1999 and has brokered over 34,000 loans. To find out how much you can save, visit www.rategenius.com or call (866) 439-5533.

Hybrid Technology: The 21st Century's Fuel Injection?

I'm going to describe an automotive technology for you, and you try to guess what I'm talking about.

This technology started out with the best of intentions. It was supposed to increase vehicle performance and fuel efficiency, but it proved too costly, undependable and unrefined to deliver on that promise. Sure, it worked in laboratory tests and under very specific real-world conditions, but the technology's potential for benefitting real-world, consumer-oriented vehicles appeared slim. While repeated attempts to improve the technology's effectiveness occurred within the R&D departments of various automakers and suppliers, it's widespread adoption on mainstream models seemed unlikely.

So, am I talking about hybrid drivetrains or fuel injection? Of course by now you know I'm talking about both.

I raise this issue in part because of Toyota's recent announcement o make all their vehicle's hybrids by 2020. While lauded by many, I find the time-frame rather unambitious. In my opinion, hybrid technology is exactly like fuel injection. It started out clunky, expensive and somewhat undependable but is quickly improving in capability, refinement and cost structure. Fifty years ago fuel injection was only on the most expensive and/or highest performance vehicles, it offered questionable advantages over carburetion, and it required a heavy and convoluted system of parts to operate. Now you can't buy a car without it because the technology just makes too much sense in terms of performance, fuel efficiency and emissions reduction.

Wait...I lost my train of thought. Was I just talking about fuel injection or hybrid drivetrains?

Anyway, there will come a day when hybrid technology is a ubiquitous drivetrain component serving to increase performance and/or fuel efficiency. It will be small, modular (meaning easy to use on mulitple models within a company's product offering) and its cost will be a required (and negligible) part of producing the entire vehicle. Heck, there will even be aftermarket conversions to put it on cars that never had it originally.

And, personally, I think that day is earlier than January 1, 2020. With the pace of technological breakthroughs in today's world it should not take as long for hybrid drivetrains to become commonplace as it did for fuel injection.
